Chapter 49
Next month was Amanda’s 70th birthday. Ashley and Steve discussed how to celebrate. Amanda showed little enthusiasm. “Don’t bother. A family dinner is enough.”
Mandy said, “But it’s your 70th birthday; we should celebrate it…”
Ashley and Steve agreed. Amanda didn’t refuse.
After dinner, Ashley and Sam left.
They got home, but Ashley stayed in the car. She said, Take a shower and rest. I have things to do; I won’t come up.”
Sam’s smile faltered. “What?” He leaned against the car, frowning, “You have things to do again?”
Ashley calmly said, “Yes. Take care of yourself, call me if you need anything.”
Sam wasn’t happy. He pouted.”Okay.” Chase often worked late, so he assumed Ashley was just busy.
The housekeeper greeted Sam. He asked, “Is Dad back?”
The housekeeper smiled, “Yes.”
Ashley showed no reaction.”I’m leaving, Sam.”
“Oh… Sam stepped aside. The housekeeper was puzzled. “Mrs. Sterling, you’re leaving?”
Ashley said, “Yes, something came up.” She told Sam,”It’s cold outside; go inside.”
“Okay. Sam waved and went inside with the housekeeper. Ashley left.
Sam asked the housekeeper, “Where’s Dad?”
Probably in the study.”
Sam went upstairs and saw Chase by the window, seemingly smoking.
“Dad’
Hmm. Chase turned. Sam said, “Mom had something to do, so she left.”
Chase put out his cigarette.”Hmm, I know. I saw her.”
Sam frowned. “Mom’s so busy lately, almost like you.”
Chase smiled slightly,”Hmm.”
Sam yawned, “I need a shower. Goodnight, Dad.”
“Goodnight, sleep well.”
Ashley showered and slept. The next day, she went to work. In the afternoon, she and Charlie went to Speed for technical maintenance. They didn’t see Chase or Tanya.
Ashley didn’t see Chase for the next few days, including when she went to cook for Sam on Thursday. He was reportedly busy and wouldn’t be home for dinner. She didn’t ask if it was a date with Tanya or a business dinner.
On Friday, Ashley was wondering what to eat when Sam called.
“Mom, Dad’s not home this weekend. When are you coming back?” That meant Ashley needed to take care of Sam this weekend. Since Chase was busy, Ashley was responsible for the kid.
Ashley went to Chase’s house. At dinner, she asked Sam where he wanted to go this weekend.
Sam shook his head.”I haven’t figured it out.” Ashley knew he only wanted to be with Chase and Tanya. She asked, “Want to go horseback riding?”
Sam hadn’t ridden in ages and happily agreed. The next day, Ashley took Sam to the stables. After changing, Ashley heard Sam say to the instructor, My

dad and aunt are amazing riders. They’re so cool, but they’re busy today.”
Ashley didn’t interrupt. The instructor greeted her, ‘Mrs. Sterling.”
Ashley nodded. He said, 71l get someone else to help you.”
