Chapter 8
1 froze.
Cold. Numb. Staring at the lifeless body on the operating table.
“I… I’m so sorry, Dr. Carter…” Lila’s voice shook, tears streaming down her ghost-white face. “I didn’t mean to… I just… my assessment’s coming up, and I wanted to practice some deep sutures… I never thought-”
“Practice?!” My voice cracked like a whip. “Are you kidding me? This was a human life! Lila, you have no business being a doctor! I’m reporting this.
You’re done!”
I swallowed the grief clawing up my throat and led the team out of the OR.
Outside, the patient’s family waited-hopeful, terrified.
I’m so sorry,” I said quietly. “We did everything we could.”
For one stunned second, they just stared. Then they broke.
“Dead?! No-no, you said Dr. Carter was operating! You said they’d live! Why are they dead?!”
Their cries turned to screams, raw, broken.
I bowed deeply. “During surgery, there was a major medical error. Our hospital is fully responsible.”
I turned, giving Lila a look-telling her to step forward, take accountability.
But the moment she saw the family’s eyes-red, wild, full of hate-she froze. Then, trembling, she hid behind me and suddenly blurted,
It was Dr. Carter! She made the final mistake! That’s why the patient died!”
My blood ran cold.
The family’s grief snapped into fury.
You! You killed my son! You monster!”
They lunged at me, screaming, trying to tear me apart. Chaos erupted instantly.
Moments later, Noah stormed in with a squad of soldiers. He barked orders, forcing the scene under control.
He was the officer in charge of the investigation.
Lila and I were placed in the same isolation room to await the results.
I glared at her curled-up figure in the corner, “Why did you lie?” I demanded. My voice was ice.
Lila sobbed, shaking all over. “Dr. Carter, please… I was terrified! If I confess, my career’s over. My parents will marry me off to that old creep. You’re
already successful, respected-please, take the fall for me! I’ll owe you forever! I’ll do anything you want!”
I stared at her in disbelief. “You’re insane. This was your mistake. You can’t hide it forever! Noah’s team will find out the truth!*
But I had severely overestimated Noah’s sense of justice.
A few hours later, we were brought to the conference room.
Noah stood at the center, stone-faced, surrounded by hospital executives and the investigation team.
His eyes swept between Lila and me before he spoke. His tone was calm. Cold. Official.
The report is complete. The lead surgeon, Dr. Ella Carter, made a closure error that caused the patient’s death.”
The words hit like a gunshot. My world cracked.
“Noah! This is your investigation?! Everyone in that OR saw it-Lila made the mistake!”
He didn’t even look at me. The conclusion is based on all available evidence. As the lead surgeon, you bear primary responsibility.”
He continued, voice clipped and emotionless. The impact is severe. However, given your record and service, we’re issuing a lenient punishment-three

days of detention for reflection.”
“Reflection?! Are you kidding me?!” I shouted as soldiers dragged me away. “Noah! You know I didn’t do it!”
No one listened.
No matter how I screamed, it didn’t matter.
I was locked in the detention center.
Three days of hell.
I couldn’t eat. Couldn’t sleep. The other inmates sensed weakness and made me their target.
And with my claustrophobia, being trapped in that dark, stifling cell nearly drove me insane.
On the third day, the victim’s family somehow got visitation rights.
They came in screaming, hurling curses-and one of them swung a hidden metal pipe.
The blows sent pain ripping through me. I heard a crack-my rib breaking.
When they finally released me, I was pale, battered, barely standing.
Noah came to pick me up.
When he saw my bruised face, his eyes flickered-but he looked away, silent.
In the car, my voice was raw, shaking. “Noah, don’t you owe me an explanation?”
