Chapter 71
The emerald necklace started at a million. Someone bid fifteen million.
Ashley countered, ‘Eighteen million.”
Twenty million.”
Twenty-five million.”
Tanya didn’t immediately raise her paddle, both Ashley and Cindy breathed a collective sigh of relief. Just as Ashley was about to bid again, Tanya raised her paddle.
“Fifty million.”
A gasp rippled through the room. Tanya calmly lowered her hand.
Ashley clenched her fist. After a moment’s hesitation, she bid, “Sixty million.”
Sixty-five million.”
“Seventy million.”
Ashley hesitated. Her grandmother’s seventieth birthday was a significant event. Eighty million…
Before she could decide, Tanya raised her paddle again.”120 million.”
Ashley’s chest tightened. She took a deep breath and silently lowered her paddle.
Perhaps everyone was still reeling from Chase’s earlier extravagance, no one else bid.
The necklace was Tanya’s.
The remaining auction items were less attractive to Ashley.
Auction rules prevented leaving before the end, so she remained in the hall. The final items were even more expensive. Watching Chase casually spend over three hundred and sixty million dollars, Cindy muttered,”Will he keep bidding? Even with his money, that’s insane! He’s really nice to that
mistress.”
Ashley couldn’t answer that. But the answer soon came. Chase didn’t bid again.
After the auction, Ashley and Cindy left the hall. Ashley avoided looking at Chase. Cindy, however, noticed Jeffery approach Chase and Tanya and
greet them.
As they exited, an older woman Cindy knew approached. After a brief chat, the woman’s gaze settled on Ashley.”Cindy, this young lady looks unfamiliar. Whose daughter is she?”
Cindy introduced Ashley.
The woman’s smile faded slightly.”Oh, Mr. Jones’ niece. You’re quite lovely…” The woman knew about the Jones family’s situation. Steve’s sister had suffered from mental health issues following a difficult romantic relationship and had been in a nursing home for years.
Ashley was beautiful and seemed gentle. Even if her mother had problems, it wouldn’t affect her, especially if she was well-educated. Unfortunately, the Jones family’s business had been declining for years. Despite Steve’s efforts, the chances of recovery were slim.
These two significant flaws, even with Ashley’s beauty and agreeable demeanor, made her unsuitable for her son. Such a pity…
Although the woman hadn’t explicitly stated anything negative, both Ashley and Cindy sensed her disappointment. While the woman continued talking to Cindy, Chase, Tanya, and Jeffery exited the auction hall.
Jeffery extended his hand to Chase and Tanya.”I should get going. See you.”
“See you, Chase replied.
Jeffery nodded and left with his friends. Others approached Chase to chat. He turned slightly, his eyes met Ashley’s. Ashley quickly looked away. Chase also diverted his gaze, engaging with the others.
Tanya, noticing Chase’s continued indifference towards Ashley, slowly curled her lips into a subtle smirk.
After chatting for over ten minutes, Cindy’s throat was parched.
She and Ashley went to the beverage area. As Cindy was about to speak, a conversation nearby caught their attention.
