“Maybe you should talk to your brother. See if you can get through to him.”
Jackson just kept quiet.
What was he supposed to say? The only reason he’d started reading those books was because Patricia had no one else left to lean on. If he actually knew anything about management or finance, Patricia could go to Golden Bay without worry—he’d stay behind and handle things in Riverdale for her.
But now…
Forget it. There was nothing left to say.
Aiden looked like he wanted to say more, but just then the phone rang from the main house. Johns was calling, asking him to head back to Golden Bay with him.
They took the helicopter straight to the airport.
As soon as they got on board, Patricia turned to him. “What was Jackson doing when you left?”
“He was reading,” Aiden said, shaking his head. “It was weird, honestly. He looked like he was in a trance or something, sitting there with an economics textbook. I almost thought he was possessed.”
That made Patricia’s eyes turn red. She pressed a shaky hand to her forehead, not sure how to respond. All she could do was cover her eyes, trying to hide the tears forming at the corners.
…
At Golden Bay Medical Center, the Padilla family patriarch still hadn’t woken up since coming out of surgery.
People were constantly coming and going, dropping in to visit and then leaving again. In the executive suite’s living room, guests arrived in groups and left in the same way. The Padilla family members were exhausted, their voices hoarse from all the polite conversation.
Miles had a younger brother, Aaron, who was the president of Golden Bay University—a big name in academia, respected by everyone in the field. Aaron’s wife, Grace, was the granddaughter of one of Golden Bay’s founders and had once been a top leader in a government office. The woman was a powerhouse, no question.
Grace always had something to say about Oliver. They didn’t see each other much, but whenever they did, she never missed a chance to throw shade.
Just like today. Once all the guests had finally left, the living room fell into an awkward silence.
