Patricia rushed outside, her steps quick and flustered.
“What’s going on?” someone called after her.
Oliver’s voice boomed across the huge yard. “Stay where you are. Don’t come any closer.”
Then he added, “Get Johns to turn on all the garden lights.”
Patricia spun around, ready to find Johns, only to see he was already on it.
From somewhere in the dark came Roger’s dramatic wail. “Uncle Oliver, can you pull me out before you turn on all the lights?”
“How did I manage to fall into a hole in my own backyard?”
Roger’s pride was in tatters. He tried to make sense of it. Sure, he’d had a few drinks for Uncle Oliver tonight, but he wasn’t that drunk. He couldn’t have missed a giant hole, right?
The lights in the Cloud Peak estate usually started dimming around midnight, but even then the path lights stayed on. There was no way he shouldn’t have seen where he was going. If he’d just been walking and suddenly fell in, there was only one explanation—someone had dug a trap in the yard.
As soon as the lights snapped on, Oliver’s dark, stormy face came into view. He crouched by the pit and reached down, obviously annoyed, to pull Roger out. “Ask Jackson about it.”
“What is he, part groundhog?” Roger grumbled.
Patricia froze. The implication hit her and a chill ran down her spine. She turned, planning her escape back into the house.
If there was a hole in the yard, it was definitely Jackson’s doing. And if Jackson was digging holes, well, that was her fault for pushing him into it. The whole mess circled right back to her. She was the one who started all this.
Time to disappear.
“Pattie!”
“Don’t move.”
Patricia had just stepped through the door when Oliver’s stern voice rang out behind her. She hesitated, then quickly hurried upstairs, practically racing for her room.
As she climbed the stairs, she called out, “Marian, get someone to fill in the hole. Take Jackson with you—make sure he points out exactly where it is.”
“Got it!” Marian said, already dialing.
