This was her stage, and everyone else just played the roles she assigned. She knew exactly how to pull the strings of power and money, using every trick in the book without breaking a sweat.
“The chief’s given the order. We have to bring her in tonight. No exceptions.”
Brandon’s stiff, by-the-rules attitude earned a few eye rolls from his coworkers. “You’re seriously that rigid, huh?”
Another grumbled, “It’s a little too perfect, isn’t it? The boss always shows up at the best possible time.”
“Yeah, like last time with Emerson. The chief could’ve come back any day, but nope—waits until she’s heading to the airport.”
“And now this—he doesn’t show up early or late, just exactly when everyone’s partying.”
“Let’s just do our jobs and not overthink it. The sooner we wrap this up, the sooner we can all breathe easier.”
Brandon, as always, stuck to the script. His coworkers barely noticed anymore—they were used to it.
If you didn’t know him, you might think he never let anything slip, never showed a crack in that perfect police act. But the people who’d worked with him knew—this was just how he was.
The car made its way down Riverdale Avenue toward the banquet hall. Parking near the river was a nightmare, so Brandon got out first, leading the rest of the team.
“Is there a back entrance here?” he asked.
“There is,” someone replied.
Brandon nodded. “You take the back.”
He paused, then remembered. He called another officer. “Can you grab my jacket from the car?”
His coworker handed it over, raising an eyebrow. “What’s this for? We’re not undercover tonight, don’t get us in trouble for breaking the rules.”
Brandon shrugged on the jacket. “What, you want me to storm in there in uniform? Are we here to arrest someone or just make a scene? You’ve got your body cam, right? Isn’t this whole thing supposed to be about respectful policing? This is me being respectful.”
His partner snorted. “Maybe a little too respectful. She’s a murder suspect, not a guest of honor.”
