Compared to Theo, he was even more unreadable, like a painting you’d never dare to peel back.
“Mr. McKee, I think you’re exaggerating. My agency is hardly worth your attention.”
“Come on, Mr. Martin, your place isn’t that small. If it were, you wouldn’t have so many big names on your list.”
Ruby glanced at her secretary. The look was all it took. The secretary quietly opened the door and slipped out. As she passed Hector, she couldn’t help but glance at him, curiosity sparking in her eyes.
“I really don’t get what you’re trying to say, Mr. McKee.”
Hector stepped inside, powered on his tablet, and placed it on the desk in front of her. “Are you sure about that? I’d think you know exactly what you’ve done.”
Ruby’s eyes flicked down to the screen. The moment she saw the photos, her fingertips pressed a little harder into the desk. It was barely noticeable, but Hector caught it.
He let out a soft laugh and pulled the tablet back. “So you do know what you’ve done.”
He looked around the office, a polite smile on his face, but his words were sharp and cold. “Let’s be honest, Mr. Martin. How long do you think Skyline Entertainment would last if Pacific Capital decided to swallow it up? Would it even take a minute?”
The meaning was crystal clear. For Pacific Capital, Skyline’s fate could change in a heartbeat.
“Tina worked so hard, even risking everything, just to give you this dream. You really should make your mother proud, especially since she’s about to go to prison for it. Imagine how she’d feel if she found out Skyline fell apart the second she left it in your hands.”
He paused, eyes cool and assessing. “And you, Mr. Martin. Always second best, never quite measuring up. You’re almost thirty, still refusing to admit defeat. If you’d chosen another path, you might have made a name for yourself by now. But you just had to keep fighting Patricia, didn’t you? Did you really think you could beat her?”
Ruby’s voice shook with anger. “Mr. McKee, did you come here just to humiliate me?”
Ruby shook her head. “I honestly have no idea.”
He smiled a little wider. “If you don’t know, that means you don’t need to know. And if you don’t need to know, why should I tell you?”
…
That evening, Patricia finished up at work. Before heading out, she called Oliver to see if he was free to go pick out their furniture.
There was a long silence on the other end.
Patricia frowned, confused. “Oliver? Why aren’t you saying anything?”
