“What? Did Oliver cheat on you?”
“It’s just a scenario,” Chelsea replied.
“I don’t do made-up scenarios. That’s just borrowing trouble,” Patricia said, sounding totally unfazed. “I’m not answering your what-if.”
“Oh my god, you’re impossible.”
“Who’s impossible, really? You’re obviously hiding something from me. Otherwise, why are you being so weird?”
Patricia could tell something was off with Chelsea. Ever since she’d come back from the bathroom, she’d been extra clingy and weirdly sentimental, not acting like herself at all.
Jackson, always the detective, had started scrolling through his phone the second Chelsea mentioned her “scenario,” digging up anything he could about Oliver.
To everyone’s surprise, he actually found something.
He handed the phone to Patricia while they waited at a red light.
A huge, dramatic headline from Golden Bay’s gossip site flashed across the screen.
“Oliver Spotted Reigniting Romance with Hernandez Family Heiress.” The words nearly made Patricia’s eyes pop.
But she got her shock under control in a heartbeat. If this headline had been about literally anyone else, she might have believed it for a second.
But the Hernandez family’s daughter? That was even less believable than Chelsea going to the bathroom just to swat flies.
As the light ticked down, Patricia gave the phone back to Jackson.
Both Jackson and Chelsea stared at her, watching every tiny change in her face.
After the first red light passed and they stopped at a second, Chelsea finally blurted out, “You’re not mad at all?”
“It’s fake. Why should I be mad?”
“How do you know it’s fake?”
“I know the whole story. Trust me, it’s fake.” Patricia was sure of it. Oliver and Helena? Not happening. Grandma Grace from the Brooks family was practically a legend, always scheming to set up Oliver and Helena, but it was all about strategy. Neither the Hernandez nor the Brooks families had produced anyone impressive lately. Grandma just wanted to use a marriage alliance to boost their standing.
