From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 304

Carmen Gates stormed into the house, her face flushed with anger, and made a beeline for Mason Bennett.

“Who is she, Mason?” she demanded, her voice trembling.

Her eyes were red, and whatever composure she’d managed to gather on the drive home had evaporated. She was practically shaking, chest heaving with every breath—a rare sight, since Carmen almost never let her emotions get the best of her.

Lavinia Bennett, worried her mother might actually faint from rage, rushed to her side and reached out. “Mom, please, sit down.”

“I will not sit down!” Carmen snapped, shrugging Lavinia off and staring daggers at Mason. “You’re not getting away from this. You tell me right now, Mason. I’m not letting this go.”

Across the room, two housekeepers were dusting the sideboard, clearly caught in the crossfire. Normally, today was supposed to be a celebration—their big wedding day at the country club. They should have been out late, dancing and sipping champagne, not coming home in the middle of the afternoon, looking more like they’d been to a funeral than a reception. And judging by Carmen’s words, some strange woman had turned things upside down.

The staff exchanged nervous glances, shrinking into themselves, not daring to breathe too loudly. They stood frozen, unsure whether to stay or bolt, terrified of becoming collateral damage.

Finally, Daniel Gill, who’d been quietly watching from the armchair, looked up and waved them away. “You two can go. Clean up later.”

“Yes, sir!” The housekeepers didn’t hesitate—they practically sprinted from the room, exhaling in relief as soon as they hit the hallway. No bit of juicy gossip was worth getting caught in that hurricane.

Mason stood on the other side of the living room, facing Carmen. In this house, he was used to being the center of gravity, the one everyone deferred to. But now, faced with Carmen’s accusing glare, he felt cornered and more than a little irritated.

Mason finally lost his temper, too. “What do you expect me to do? You’re not even listening! You just want to yell at me.”

“Oh, I’m sorry—am I not acting the way you’d like? After what you did?!” Carmen shot back, not backing down an inch. Usually, she let a lot slide, but not this time.

Her eyes were blazing. “You’re the one who screwed up. And now you’re acting like I’m the crazy one? You’ve got a woman and a kid out there, and somehow, this is my fault?”

Mason’s eyes darkened with anger and something almost like disgust. He glanced at Lavinia and Daniel, who were both watching silently, and lowered his voice.

“The kids are still here. Do you really want to do this in front of them?”
