Olivia Bennett nodded.
The nurse smiled. “Don’t worry, just hold her gently and you’ll be fine.”
Olivia murmured an “Okay,” but her arms never loosened, as if she were cradling the most fragile, precious glass ornament in the world.
After a few reminders about what to watch out for, the nurse hurried off.
Still holding her baby, Olivia felt a sense of wonder that wouldn’t leave her.
How on earth could something so tiny be a whole person? And she’d just brought her into the world herself.
She held the baby with one arm and couldn’t resist reaching out with her free hand to gently touch her little cheek.
“So soft,” she whispered, eyes sparkling with delight and curiosity.
Ethan Carter leaned in, equally fascinated.
Olivia glanced at him, unable to keep the awe out of her voice. “How can she be so small?”
Ethan had never seen a baby this tiny up close before—it was hard to believe. The two of them sat there, side by side, peering down at their daughter, the very picture of clueless but enchanted new parents.
It made Adelina Lane, standing nearby, burst out laughing.
She said, “You two were just as tiny once, you know. She’s 6 pounds, 2 ounces. Ethan, you were a little bigger—about 7 pounds, give or take.”
Olivia grinned. “I have no idea how much I weighed.”
Ethan said, “My dad’s on his way over. Maybe he’ll remember.”
Olivia nodded and turned her full attention back to the baby, heart overflowing.
Adelina Lane chimed in, “You haven’t picked a name yet.”
Olivia looked up at Ethan. “Your turn.”
They’d talked about names before, but never decided.
“Olivia, you can pick a nickname,” Adelina added.
Olivia studied the baby’s face for a long moment, then smiled. “Let’s call her Carey. Like ‘care’—because she’s surrounded by love.”
Ethan nodded. “Sounds perfect.”
She was so little and soft, he was terrified he’d hurt her if he so much as breathed wrong.
Adelina chuckled and talked him through it from the sidelines.
When he finally managed to hold Carey securely, Ethan let out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding. “Jeez,” he muttered, “this is harder than a two-hour board meeting.”
Adelina laughed and was about to say more when footsteps sounded in the hallway.
The door swung open.
Everyone in the room looked up.
Lance Carter, Lily George, Damian Franklin, and Beatty walked in.
Adelina blinked in surprise. “You all came together?”
Lance grinned. “Ran into each other in the parking lot, so we figured we’d come up together.”
Lily’s eyes went straight to the little bundle in Ethan’s arms. She hurried to the bedside, peering anxiously at the baby. “Is she okay?”
