The assistant paused for a second. “I’m still waiting on my visa, Mr. Clarkson.”
“Oh.” Max didn’t have much else to say.
Silence hung between them.

Eleanor set up a meeting with Jessie for the weekend. Jessie said yes right away, not bothering to play hard to get. Still, Eleanor knew she was anything but easy.
At the café, they sat across from each other in a private room. Jessie looked perfectly calm, almost smug, as if she had all the time and power in the world. “So, what did you want to talk about, Eleanor? No need to beat around the bush.”
Eleanor took a breath. “I want you to donate bone marrow to my brother. Name your price. I’ll pay whatever you want.”
Jessie swirled her coffee, eyes sharp with mischief. “A price? The thing is, I don’t need money. And honestly, I’m kind of a wimp about pain. Sure, I know this could save your brother, but after all those rumors you’ve spread about me online, why would I do you any favors?”
Eleanor met her gaze, refusing to look away. She caught the challenge in Jessie’s eyes. “Then what do you want?”
Jessie put her spoon down, dropping the act. “Here’s my deal. I’ll donate my bone marrow, pain and all. Plus, I’ll give you thirty million. All you have to do is drop the lawsuit and give up your claim to half of Peter’s assets. I’ll make sure he signs the divorce papers.”
She leaned in slightly. “Thirty million is more than enough for you and your brother to live on for the rest of your lives.”
It was a lot of money, but Eleanor knew what she was really being asked to give up. She was entitled to so much more—over a billion, if she fought for it. And now Jessie wanted her to walk away with just a fraction, to accept this deal like she’d done something wrong?
Meanwhile, Autumn handed Juliana a stack of papers—an agreement to waive her claim to any marital assets. Her voice was cold. “Have your daughter sign this. If you do, I’ll convince Jessie to donate her bone marrow to your son.”
Juliana hesitated for a moment, but then she remembered what her daughter had said. She was never going to see that money anyway, and right now, her son’s life was all that mattered. “I’ll sign. I’ll sign right now.”
Autumn watched her sign, her expression satisfied. “Tell your daughter not to cause any more problems. If she upsets Jessie, there’s no guarantee she’ll go through with the donation.”
Jared, sitting in his hospital bed nearby, looked up with worry. “Mom, what were you talking about with her just now?”
Juliana sat down, pressing a hand to her chest, her face lit up with excitement. “See, Jared? Your mom is the one who really loves you. She’s agreed to the donation! You’re always sticking up for Eleanor, but when it really matters, she doesn’t even show up.”
Right then, Eleanor pushed open the door, her voice cutting through the room. “Doesn’t show up for what?”
