"Mom, I’m not going to sacrifice Eleanor’s well-being just so I can have this transplant. You need to remember, if it weren’t for everything Eleanor’s done, I wouldn’t even be here today."
Juliana’s face twisted with anger. She pressed a hand to her chest, her voice shaky and raw. "She’s not your sister. All of this, she owes you."
Jared’s eyes flew wide in disbelief. "Mom, what are you talking about?"
Juliana caught herself and fell silent. The tension in the room made it hard to breathe.
"Mom, I don’t care how upset you are, you can’t say that about Eleanor. She is my sister. No one else could ever be."
Eleanor didn’t leave the hospital. Instead, she slipped into the chief physician’s office.
"Ms. Rolland, do we know when the donor will be ready for the transplant?" the doctor asked.
Eleanor bit her lip. "Doctor, things might have changed. She might not agree to it after all."
The doctor frowned, worry settling into his features. This wasn’t unusual. Even registered donors sometimes changed their minds at the last minute. Some partial matches didn’t survive the transplant. But finding a perfect match meant the chances of success went up, a real shot at hope.
"I understand, Ms. Rolland. Still, if there’s any way you can talk to her, please try. These perfect matches are rare."
He let out a long sigh, then his tone grew heavier. "And I have more bad news. We ran a full exam on Jared yesterday. He’s not doing well. He puts on a brave face, but he’s waking up at night from pain. His test results are way worse than last year. I’m afraid he might not have much time left."
"If we wait until next year for the surgery, the sixty percent success rate could drop even lower."
Max got another message saying Eleanor had called in sick again. He didn’t show any emotion. His assistant called from Korea. "Mr. Clarkson, we’ve spoken to the donor. She’s about to board the plane. Should we tell Ms. Rolland ourselves or just go straight to the hospital?"
Max checked the time. "Go to the hospital when you land. Tell the chief doctor it’s a newly registered match. Let him explain it to her that way."
"Understood, Mr. Clarkson."
The assistant hung up, still unsure why Max insisted on keeping Ms. Rolland in the dark. Even after five years working for him, he still couldn’t figure the man out.
He turned to the man behind him and said, "Let’s get going. Time to board."
