As soon as the words were out, everyone shared quick, surprised glances that they tried to hide.
Call him “brother”? He’s more than ten years older than me. How am I supposed to call him that?
Jared hesitated, the word getting stuck in his throat.
Eleanor’s mind started to race. Did Mr. Clarkson mind being called old? Did Jared’s “uncle” just offend him? Oh no, what if he’s secretly annoyed now?
Juliana’s eyes flashed with a strange light, and she couldn’t help but think something was off. Wait, could this man actually like my daughter?
She jumped in with a bright laugh. “Jared, come on, Mr. Clarkson is so young. Why call him uncle? Just call him Max!”
Eleanor didn’t say anything, but she couldn’t help but feel a little awkward.
Jared stayed silent too.
Max’s lips twitched into a small smile. “You’re flattering me. I’m really not that young. I’m thirty-three this year, five years older than Eleanor, but I guess that’s not too old yet.”
For some reason, Eleanor felt her ears turning red.
Jared noticed and his eyes flickered. “Thank you, Max.”
Max sat down without making a fuss and slowly pulled a small box from his pocket. “I was on a business trip last week and happened to stop by a temple. I saw this bracelet. Every bead has a tiny symbol for good luck. I wanted to give it to you, Jared. Just a little something from me.”
Jared looked helplessly at Eleanor.
Eleanor was just as shocked and blurted out, “Mr. Clarkson, we really can’t accept this. It’s too expensive.”
She couldn’t tell how much the bracelet was worth, but if Max was giving it, it definitely wasn’t cheap.
Juliana’s eyes lit up, convinced her earlier guess was spot on. She quickly tried to smooth things over. “Eleanor, it’s a gift from Mr. Clarkson. Just take it. The meaning behind the symbols is so thoughtful. He really put a lot of care into this.”
Max suddenly found Juliana a lot more agreeable. “It’s not expensive. Please, just take it.”
Eleanor nodded. “Okay.”
When she got back to the hospital room, her mom’s eyes were practically sparkling. “Eleanor, I just looked him up. Your boss is amazing!”
Not just amazing—legendary. Her son-in-law might have the same last name, but based on what she’d just read, this Max was on a whole different level.
“Is your boss married? Does he have a girlfriend? Or is he single?”
Eleanor frowned, clearly annoyed. “Mom, whether he’s single or not, it has nothing to do with me. I’m still married, remember?”
It was like dumping a bucket of ice water over Juliana’s excitement.
She pouted. “You’re about to get divorced anyway. I’m just asking.”
“I’m telling you, your boss definitely has feelings for you. If you get divorced and he’s still single, you should go for it.”
