Eleanor let out a sharp, mocking laugh, her eyes filled with scorn.
Would her mother ever stop making it so obvious she was trying to marry her off like some prized possession?
“Mom, do you really think a man like Mr. Clarkson, with his status and money, would want a woman who’s divorced and already has a child?”
In the eyes of a lot of men, harsh as it sounded, someone like her was just old stock on the discount shelf. That was the ugly truth.
Eleanor wasn’t looking to get married again. She didn’t want to be picked over like she was in some shop window.
Juliana opened her mouth, looking like she wanted to argue back, but nothing came out. She gave up and shut her mouth.
Jared quickly jumped in, asking their mom to go get him some hot water, just to get her out of the room for a minute. When she was gone, he turned to Eleanor, his voice soft and comforting.
“Eleanor, don’t take it to heart. Mom really doesn’t mean any harm.”
He hesitated before adding, “But… don’t you think that gift from your boss was a bit much?”
Eleanor smiled gently. “It probably wasn’t a big deal to him. Just keep it, Jared. Prayer beads are supposed to bring good luck. I hope your life is always surrounded by blessings from now on.”
“Eleanor…”
“Alright, only two more days and you’ll be out of here. Are you excited?”
Jared’s eyes lit up, clear and bright. “I am! I can’t wait!”
“Eleanor, I want to go back to school. I want to try for college.” Even while he wasn’t in school, he kept studying on his own.
Eleanor knew Jared was like a sunflower that had grown in the shade, always reaching up, fighting to grow taller and stronger. Now, finally, he was about to step into the sunlight.
“Of course, but let’s wait until your check-ups show everything is stable, okay? I’ll keep an eye out for schools for you.”
Autumn rolled her eyes. “What? Feeling sorry for her now? Peter, you need to see her for who she really is.”
“She let her own brother get this sick. I went to the hospital and told her if she gave up fighting you for your assets, Jessie would donate bone marrow to her brother. Look at that, ten days have passed and she hasn’t done a thing. She’s just that heartless.”
Then Autumn looked at her granddaughter. “Olga, that woman is too cruel. Don’t call her your mother anymore.”
Peter slammed his fork onto the table, making everyone jump. “Mom, when did you go talk to her?”
“And why am I only hearing about this now?”
Autumn’s lips quivered. “I was just trying to help. Or do you really want her to walk away with half of everything you’ve worked for?”
“Her own mother signed the papers, but Eleanor still refused to come and ask me for help. Tell me, do you want a woman that cold in your life?”
Peter’s eyes narrowed, dark and sharp. “Mom, what agreement?”
