As Peter flipped through the agreement his mother handed him, his face changed with every page.
“Mom, what are you even thinking?”
Autumn looked hurt. “I talked to a lawyer about this. How is it crazy? What, you actually want to help her brother for nothing?”
“Peter, seriously, wake up. That woman humiliated you in front of everyone. She served you with court papers right to your face. She clearly doesn’t want to be with you anymore. Why are you still trying to look out for her?”
Peter’s breathing grew unsteady. He knew his mom made some valid points, but using Jared’s life to threaten Eleanor felt wrong. No matter what, Eleanor had been his wife for years. He just couldn’t be that heartless.
He grabbed his jacket and headed for the door, wanting to check on Jared at the hospital, but Jessie called out to him.
“Peter, where are you going? Are you really going to see her brother?”
“It’s almost eight. Even if you go now, Eleanor might not even be there.”
Peter stopped in his tracks.
Olga didn’t understand what the argument was about, but she knew her grandma and dad were fighting again because of her mom. Why did her mom always have to mess up their family’s peace?
The little girl hurried over and hugged Peter’s leg. “Daddy, don’t go. Stay home with Olga.”
Peter finally stopped, letting out a heavy breath. He gently stroked Olga’s hair. “Alright, Daddy’s not going out tonight.”
He picked Olga up and carried her to her room, not looking back at his mother.
Autumn slumped into a dining chair, voice trembling. “Jessie, was Peter just blaming me?”
Tears started falling. “He’s blaming me, all for that woman?”
Jessie’s eyes clouded with worry. She hadn’t expected Peter to react like that. Still, it didn’t matter. Things couldn’t go back to how they were. Divorce was just a matter of time.
“Mom, don’t be upset. Peter’s just been under a lot of pressure at work. He’s always been such a good guy.”
“He’s just too nice. That’s all.”
Max’s eyes narrowed a little. “You’re taking a cab?”
“Yeah.”
Eleanor didn’t have a car, and she had no plans to buy one before the divorce was final. Anything she bought now would be split with Peter, and she didn’t want that headache. Better to wait.
Max glanced at his watch. “Taking a taxi isn’t the easiest. I’m free today, so let me drive you.”
Eleanor hesitated, her eyebrows drawing together. “Mr. Clarkson, that’s really not necessary. I don’t want to trouble you.”
Was he getting a little too involved? Visiting her brother in the hospital was one thing. This felt different.
Max noticed the hesitation on her face and smiled. “Don’t get me wrong. I just think your brother would be more comfortable in a car, considering his condition.”
He paused, then added, “Besides, I looked up those cufflinks you gave me. They’re worth at least two months of your salary. Let me do this as a thank you. Honestly, it’s no trouble at all.”
