His answer was so matter-of-fact that Eleanor suddenly felt like she was making a big deal out of nothing.
"Alright. Thank you, Mr. Clarkson. You’ve helped me so many times, I honestly don’t know how to repay you."
Max gave a small smile, one eyebrow raised. "I don’t have many hobbies, but I do love your cooking. Just let that be my thank you."
Eleanor couldn't help but smile. "Deal."
When Max showed up at the hospital, Juliana’s hope, which had been fading, sparked right back to life. She was sure—just from a woman’s intuition—that this boss of her daughter’s had feelings for her. Maybe she didn’t know exactly how deep those feelings went, but it was definitely more than a normal boss-employee relationship.
She didn’t call him out on it, though.
"Thank you so much, Mr. Clarkson," Juliana said, looking genuinely grateful.
Max gave her a friendly smile. "Please, just call me Max. Or even by my first name if you’d like."
That just made Juliana even more certain of her guess.
In the back seat, Jared watched the man up front through the rearview mirror. Max’s features were sharp and handsome, his eyes tilted up at the corners—the kind of look people called dangerously charming.
Jared wondered if Eleanor would really be okay with someone like this after her divorce. Would she get hurt again? Max didn’t seem like someone easy to figure out, and Jared worried she might end up in another mess.
Max glanced at the mirror, catching Jared’s gaze for a split second. Jared felt like he’d been caught snooping and quickly looked away.
Max let out a quiet laugh, but didn’t say anything.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Eleanor was completely unaware of all this silent drama. She sent Max the address, and soon his car slipped out of the hospital parking lot.
Peter had a meeting that morning that went until one. He didn’t even have time for lunch, just hurried straight to the hospital. He had to see Eleanor. He needed to tell her he’d never used her brother’s illness to threaten her, that he wasn’t the one behind that cruel scheme.
She watched as his face grew more and more serious.
"Can you say that again? Who picked him up?"
Noticing the tension in his voice, the nurse took a small step back. "Jared’s sister and her husband. And his mother, too. They were all together."
Is this guy okay? she wondered.
Her husband?
So Eleanor really did have someone else.
No wonder she was so eager to get divorced.
