Max dropped them off in front of Juliana’s old apartment building.
Juliana was already scheming, wringing her hands as she tried to come up with a way to keep this obviously well-off man around a bit longer. “Mr. Clarkson, I really can’t thank you enough for everything today. If you don’t mind our humble place, would you like to come upstairs for a glass of water before you go?”
“Mom,” Eleanor interjected, clearly embarrassed. “Don’t trouble Mr. Clarkson. I’m sure he’s got plenty to do.”
It was the weekend, but Max probably had a busy schedule regardless. Besides, Eleanor felt like they weren’t at the level of casual home visits. Just seeing his flashy car parked outside was enough to draw stares from every neighbor passing by.
Eleanor expected Max to politely decline, but he just smiled. “I don’t mind at all. I am actually a little thirsty. I’ll park the car a bit further away and come up.”
Juliana nearly beamed. “Perfect. Eleanor, wait here for Mr. Clarkson. Jared and I will head up first.”
Eleanor was basically left standing there.
As Juliana and Jared made their way upstairs, they bumped into a neighbor heading out for groceries. “Oh, Juliana, your son’s finally home from the hospital. Congratulations. By the way, was that your son-in-law in that fancy car just now? Didn’t quite look like him.”
Juliana couldn’t help showing off. “Oh, don’t get the wrong idea. That’s not my son-in-law. That’s my daughter’s boss. He’s very successful.”
Jared squirmed, not a fan of his mom bragging to the neighbors. “Mom, let’s go already.”
“Yes, yes, let’s go. We should get inside.”
Eleanor found a spot for Max’s car under some trees. The old complex didn’t have proper parking, so this was the best she could do.
Max glanced at her, his eyelashes casting tiny shadows. “You don’t really want me to come up, do you?”
Eleanor forced a smile. “Of course I do. I just don’t want to waste your time, Mr. Clarkson.”
He nodded, looking unfazed. “I really don’t have anything urgent this morning. To be honest, I skipped breakfast and my blood sugar’s a little low. I could use a breather.”
Jared could see it. Max was interested in his sister.
“Mr. Clarkson, my sister’s already married, you know,” Jared said quietly. It wasn’t meant as an insult, but the warning in his voice was unmistakable.
He wanted Max to understand that Eleanor was trapped in a difficult marriage and desperate to get out. She didn’t have the energy or the heart for another complicated relationship.
Jared had googled Max after meeting him the first time. The guy was a mystery, powerful, decisive, and completely from another world compared to Eleanor. Jared worried his sister would be drawn in, only to get hurt all over again.
Max just smiled, not bothered at all by the warning. “I know. Her divorce lawyer is a good friend of mine.”
Jared’s eyebrows went up. He had no idea their lives overlapped this much.
Max looked at him and added, “Don’t worry, Jared. Not every man is like your sister’s ex.”
