It only took a few days for Lily to track down the girl Paola was searching for.
“Oh, her? She used to work in our secretarial office. Her name’s Eleanor. Wait, you mean she saved Mrs. Madden?” The receptionist looked genuinely surprised.
“Yes, that’s right. Do you happen to have her contact info?” Paola asked.
The receptionist shook her head. “Sorry, I don’t. Her profile’s already been removed from our system.”
But with a name, it wasn’t hard to find her. Paola soon learned that Eleanor was now working in the research department at Clarkson Corporation, specializing in biological research. It made sense now—she knew CPR and was the reason Paola was still alive.
After work, Eleanor was heading out when she spotted the same elderly woman she’d helped before, waiting outside the building.
“Oh, it’s you,” Eleanor said, surprised.
The woman smiled warmly. “Yes, it’s me, dear. If you don’t mind, you can call me Grandma Madden. You’re about the same age as my granddaughter.” Her eyes lit up as she spoke. “I came here today just to thank you in person for saving my life.”
Eleanor gave her a gentle smile. “Grandma Madden, really, it was nothing. Anyone would have done the same.”
She made it sound easy, but without her, Paola wouldn’t be standing there smiling.
“Would you have dinner with me? I won’t feel right until I get to treat you.”
Eleanor hesitated, glancing at her phone as if she might come up with an excuse. But the old woman looked so sincere she didn’t have the heart to say no.
“Alright,” she agreed. “Let me just let someone know.”
Truthfully, she was about to cancel on Max again.
Max was in a good mood as he got into his car with a bouquet of flowers. Then he saw Eleanor’s message, letting him know she wouldn’t be home to cook dinner.
[Max: Alright. Looks like it’s instant noodles for me tonight.]
Eleanor bit her lip, then typed back, [I’m eating out. Want me to bring you something when I get back?]
She honestly wasn’t sure if Max would be okay with leftovers, but surprisingly, he agreed.
“Let’s go, Grandma Madden. There’s a nice place nearby,” Eleanor suggested, keeping things convenient.
Paola nodded, still beaming. “Perfect, let’s eat close by.”
Dinner passed in a blur of easy conversation and laughter. Paola had actually brought a check along, tucked away in her purse, but she never took it out. All of a sudden, money felt like the wrong way to thank someone for saving her life.
“Eleanor, here’s my phone number and address. If you ever need anything, please reach out.”
Eleanor lifted her brows in surprise but didn’t refuse. She doubted she’d ever call for a favor, but you never know. Sometimes, having another friend or connection could make all the difference. She was starting to understand how important that was.
She accepted the note. “Thank you, Grandma Madden. I’ll hold onto it.”
Paola looked delighted. “Next week is my birthday party. If you’re free, you should come.”
Eleanor smiled politely but didn’t say yes. They weren’t that close, and she didn’t feel right about going to such an event just yet.
As they left, Eleanor ordered a fresh meal to go.
Paola noticed right away. “Is that for your husband?”
Eleanor shook her head. “No, I don’t have a husband. It’s for a friend. Thank you for dinner, Grandma Madden. I should get going.”
Paola watched her walk away, thoughtful. But according to her background check, Eleanor was supposed to be married…
