Paola never bothered to find out who Eleanor’s husband was. That wasn’t why she wanted to thank her. She just wanted to show her gratitude, nothing more. She knew when to stop.
Back home, Paola couldn’t help but bring it up to Andrew. “Remember the girl I told you about, the one who saved me? She looks so much like our daughter.”
At the mention of their daughter, Andrew’s face clouded over. No one had ever expected she would leave them so soon.
He tried to keep his voice steady. “Let’s not talk about that. Lots of people look alike, it doesn’t mean anything.”
Paola understood how much Andrew missed their daughter. If she pushed any more, he’d only get sadder. “Okay, okay, I won’t bring it up. No need to get upset.”
Just then, Jessie walked in.
“Grandpa, Grandma, I’m here for dinner again.”
Andrew’s mood softened right away. “You’re always welcome here. What do you mean, ‘for dinner again’?”
Jessie grinned, grabbing a piece of fish with her fingers and popping it into her mouth. She licked her lips, totally pleased. “Mmm, the housekeeper’s cooking keeps getting better.”
“Go wash your hands,” Paola scolded, shaking her head. “You and that mouth of yours.”
Jessie’s grandparents loved her deeply. To them, she was someone who had already suffered so much. She had lost Grady, her husband, before they even had a chance to start a family.
Paola hesitated, then asked, “Didn’t your dad want to set you up with someone? You didn’t go?”
Jessie made a face. “Grandma, the guy Dad picked out was so boring. Seriously, I couldn’t do it.”
She paused, her voice softer. “Besides, Grady’s only been gone a few months. I’m just not in the mood.”
Paola let out a sigh and said nothing more.
Jessie perked up. “By the way, Grandma, did you ever find the person who saved you?”
Paola’s lips curled into a smile. “I did.”
“Was it a doctor?”
“No, she works as a researcher over at Clarkson Corporation.”
Jessie felt a weird chill run through her. “A researcher, huh? That’s funny, we’re in the same field.”
“Yes, Eleanor is really impressive. Oh, and she used to work in the secretarial department at your company. You must know her, right?”
Jessie’s heart skipped a beat. Secretary, switched to Clarkson Corporation. It had to be Eleanor.
“Eleanor?” Jessie's whole face went cold. “What’s her full name?”
Paola smiled. “Eleanor Rolland.”
“Do you know her?” Paola asked.
Jessie let out a quiet, bitter laugh. Of course it was her. Eleanor had always been lucky, even accidentally saving her grandmother. Or maybe it wasn’t an accident at all.
“Know her? Of course I do,” Jessie said, the sarcasm thick in her voice. “Grandma, she’s not who you think.”
Paola stared at her, surprised. “What? Eleanor doesn’t seem like a bad person at all.”

Eleanor had no idea Jessie was talking behind her back, and honestly, she didn’t care. She showed up at Max’s place, carrying a couple of containers of food that were still warm.
“Mr. Clarkson, I brought you a couple of dishes. They’re not really hot anymore, but I can warm them up for you.”
Max nodded. “Thank you. That’d be great.”
As she got the food ready, Eleanor noticed a vase of white roses on the table.
“Did your housekeeper buy these? They’re beautiful.”
Max raised an eyebrow. “Do you like them?”
“If you do, take them home.”
Eleanor was about to say no, but he spoke up again, almost too casually. “There’s plenty more. I’ll have the housekeeper get more tomorrow.”
She had no idea Max was being sneaky, sending her flowers without saying it outright.
“Well, thank you, Mr. Clarkson.”
While Max ate, he looked up. “Did you have plans with a friend tonight?”
Eleanor shook her head. “No, I just ran into this older lady on the street a while back and helped her. She said she’d been looking for me and wanted to thank me in person. I didn’t have the heart to say no.”
