Jared got great news at his follow-up appointment. The doctor told him that as long as he avoided intense physical activity, he was fine to go back to school and pick up his regular classes again.
Eleanor thanked the doctor, then left the hospital with Jared.
“So, what do you think, Jared? Public high schools are off the table for you right now. The private ones will probably want you to do interviews and take entrance exams first.” She glanced over at him. “I’ve picked out three solid options. The fees are reasonable for the quality of the teaching staff, and we can handle the costs at any of them.”
She hadn’t even considered those pricey international schools. There were too many rich kids there, and she worried all that showing off and social climbing would be bad for Jared.
“Eleanor, I’ll just go with whatever you think is best. Maybe we can check them out one by one?”
That was exactly what she had in mind. They started with Brookstone High, which was closest to their house.
The admissions officer looked over Jared’s paperwork and seemed to get lost in thought.
“Ms. Rolland, you’re Jared’s sister, right?”
“That’s right.”
The officer gave her a quick look. “So why isn’t his mother here today?”
Eleanor hesitated. Juliana hadn’t come because Eleanor had asked her not to. Juliana hadn’t had much education herself, and she was just a retired factory worker. Her being there wouldn’t help Jared’s chances at a competitive private school. These days, lots of schools cared about more than just grades. They wanted to know the family background too. Brookstone was one of the top private high schools, so of course they could afford to be picky. If students didn’t want to jump through these hoops, they could just go to a regular public school instead.
Jared squeezed his fists together in his lap. Watching Eleanor fight so hard for him made his chest ache. It hurt because people were already judging him before he’d even had a chance to prove himself. But it also moved him, seeing that no matter how tough things got, Eleanor never once thought about giving up on him.
“Mr. O’Hart, please give me a chance,” Jared said quietly. “I know I’ve been studying on my own, but I’m not worse than anyone else here.”
Just then, a few school administrators walked into the office.
“Well, Mr. O’Hart, look who’s come back to see us,” one of them joked.
Paola walked in, her smile bright. When she saw Eleanor in the room, she paused, just a little surprised.
