“Eleanor?”
Eleanor blinked in surprise. “Grandma Madden?”
Mr. O’Hart looked just as shocked. “Wait, you know our old headmistress?”
“Why didn’t you say so earlier?”
As soon as she heard him mention “headmistress,” Eleanor finally put the pieces together. So Grandma Madden was the former principal of Brookstone High. The world really was a tangled web. For Jared’s sake, Eleanor took a deep breath and stepped forward, determined.
“Grandma Madden, this is my younger brother. He was sick for a long time but he’s better now. He wants to come to Brookstone High. We were just talking to Mr. O’Hart, hoping he could get a shot at the entrance exam. If he passes, maybe the school could let him in.”
Paola was about to jump in and agree, but then she remembered something Jessie had said and stopped herself.
“So, what did Mr. O’Hart say?” Paola asked instead.
Eleanor had half-expected Paola to put in a word for her. After all, last time Paola had been so warm and grateful, Eleanor thought she would definitely help out now. Maybe she had misread things.
Just then, another administrator nearby spoke up, grinning. “Come on, Mr. O’Hart, give the kid a chance. Let’s just see how he does.”
Mr. O’Hart nodded after a moment. “Alright. Come back the day after tomorrow and take the entrance exam with the new freshmen. If your score is in the top fifty, we’ll make an exception and admit you. How’s that sound?”
Eleanor turned to Jared. His eyes were bright with excitement. “Yes! I can do it!”
The exam was all in one day. Eleanor had to work, but in the morning she and her mom went to drop Jared off at school.
Jared was all smiles as he walked through the school gates.
“You should head to work. I’ll wait for him at the school entrance,” Juliana told her.
Eleanor frowned. “Mom, you don’t have to. He won’t be done until noon. You could just come back then.”
Juliana shook her head. “It’s fine. I’ll borrow a stool from that little diner and sit out here. I’ll just scroll on my phone. The morning will go by before I know it.”
Eleanor knew there was no talking her out of it, so she flagged down a cab and headed to the office. She didn’t notice the red sports car parked under the trees nearby. The person inside gave a cold little smile, then picked up their phone and made a call.
