Jared really didn’t want to deal with his mom’s nagging. “Mom, I’m going back to my room to study. Classes start again next week.”
Juliana just stared at him, lost for words.
She couldn’t figure out what kind of magic Eleanor had over Jared. He was always glued to Eleanor, never to her.
After leaving home, Eleanor went straight to the education office to file a complaint.
She’d already written a long letter. She wasn’t sure if it would do anything to Brookstone High, but she had to try. No way was she just going to put up with being treated unfairly.
When she got back to Max’s place, she started making dinner, just like always.
Max noticed right away that she was in a good mood.
He raised an eyebrow. “Did you get your brother’s school stuff sorted out?”
“All done,” Eleanor replied, her eyes bright with relief. “It’s all thanks to Mr. Sidler. I should really take him out for dinner to thank him.”
But honestly, a dinner didn’t feel like enough.
“Mr. Clarkson, do you know what Mr. Sidler likes?” she asked. “I want to get him a little thank-you gift. Any ideas?”
“A gift for Linden?” Max paused to think. “Why should he get one?”
Still, he answered seriously. “He wears dress shirts to court a lot. You could buy him a nice shirt. Nothing too fancy, he’s not the type. White or gray—he likes those.”
Eleanor was surprised at how well Max knew Mr. Sidler’s preferences.
Then again, white and gray were pretty safe choices. She noticed Max seemed to like those colors himself.
“Thanks, Mr. Clarkson. I also went to the education office today and filed a complaint. I don’t know if it’ll work, but at least it’ll give them something to worry about.”
With that, Eleanor headed back to the kitchen.
The education office… Max had almost forgotten about that awful school.
He smiled at her. “The hearing is tomorrow—are you ready?”
Eleanor’s eyes held a quiet confidence, and she smiled. “Yeah, I’m ready.”
“Alright. Let’s hope everything goes smoothly for both of us.”
As soon as Eleanor left, Max walked in like he owned the place.
“So, where’s the shirt?” Max held out his hand.
Linden shot him a look. “That was a thank-you gift from Ms. Rolland. For me.”
Max just laughed. “You didn’t get her brother into that school. That gift is clearly for me.”
Linden stared at him. “You… you’re shameless!”
Max flashed the size tag at him. “See? It’s my size. Obviously meant for me. Thanks, I’ll be taking it.” He snatched the shirt and walked out, leaving Linden speechless.
