After dropping off Linden’s gift, Eleanor went home but couldn’t sleep at all.
Jared knew she had a court hearing the next day. Eleanor didn’t want him to go with her, but he still sent a message.
[Jared: Eleanor, can I wait for you outside the courthouse tomorrow?]
[Jared: No matter how it turns out, I think you’d want the first person you see to be family.]
She hadn’t even told Jared which courthouse she was going to, but she wasn’t worried. She knew he wouldn’t try to force his way in.
[Eleanor: Alright. Will you be okay on your own?]
[Jared: Eleanor, I’ll be eighteen next year. I’m basically an adult.]
She couldn’t help but laugh.
Jared really was growing up fast, and soon, she’d finally get a chance to start over.
Peter was wide awake too.
He’d thought about skipping the hearing, but his lawyer told him that would only make things worse for him. It wouldn’t look good, and what if Eleanor surprised everyone with new evidence, like last time?
Peter’s lawyer promised he’d do everything possible to show Eleanor as nothing more than an inexperienced housewife. That kind of story usually worked in the husband’s favor.
Peter didn’t argue. Still, the idea that Eleanor was set on leaving him made his chest ache. Once it was all over, he thought, maybe he’d give her a little extra money. Just a little.
Eleanor stood outside the courthouse in a black outfit, giving Jared last-minute instructions. “There’s a coffee shop across the street. Go wait there for me, okay? This will take a while. At least two hours.”
Jared nodded.
“Your mom doesn’t know where you are, does she?”
He grinned. “I told her I was going to the library. She has no clue, Eleanor.”
Eleanor was relieved. If Juliana came, she’d just cause trouble. Eleanor didn’t want her around and didn’t expect any help from her anyway.
“Let’s go. It’s almost time. Ms. Rolland, let’s head in,” Linden said.
“Eleanor, are you obsessed with money or what? Why should everything my son worked so hard for go to you? Have you lost your mind?”
The judge frowned and his voice was icy. “Order in the court.”
Peter shook his head at his mom and motioned for Jessie to hold her back.
“Mom, calm down. We need to keep it together.”
Autumn took a deep breath, forcing herself to settle down.
Peter’s lawyer, who had been handling divorce cases for ten years, went after what he thought were Eleanor’s weak spots.
“First, my client did not cheat. The so-called ‘other woman’ is actually his sister-in-law. That trip happened after my client’s older brother passed away. He was trying to comfort Jessie, his grieving sister-in-law, and both she and my client’s daughter were with him. How could this possibly be called infidelity?”
Peter glanced at Eleanor. “Right. I didn’t bring her because she was pregnant. It wouldn’t have been safe for her to travel. I wasn’t cheating. She just misunderstood.”
“Second, the claim that my client was emotionally neglectful is not true. The plaintiff’s brother has a long-term illness that needs expensive treatment. After marrying my client, the plaintiff has been working at his company, but her salary isn’t enough to pay her brother’s bills. My client, out of kindness to his wife’s family, has helped them many times. How is that emotional neglect?”
