From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 149

Jessie rushed into the hospital and saw Peter gently washing Autumn, his attention focused and careful.

“Peter, Autumn’s in the hospital? This is huge. Why didn’t you call me?”

“Peter, let me help,” she said, stepping closer.

Peter’s tone was cool. “No need. I’ve already finished.” He picked up the basin and headed to the bathroom.

When he came back, drying his hands, Jessie bit her lip and hesitated. “Peter, I had no idea Autumn was sick.”

Peter answered quietly. “No, you didn’t.”

“Jessie, it’s always me running after you when you’re upset. No matter how busy I am or what I’m doing, the moment you say you’re unhappy, I drop everything and come to you. Even last year, when Olga was in the hospital, I did the same.”

He frowned, frustration showing. “I kept hoping you’d make the first move. Just once. I thought if I always put you first, you’d do the same for me.”

Jessie rarely saw Peter look this serious. She realized she’d pushed him too far this time.

“Peter, I’m sorry. I was just mad the other day because Autumn blamed me. Please don’t ignore me.”

“You mean a lot to me too,” she added softly.

Her eyes filled with tears, spilling over as she spoke. “Peter, these days have been so hard for me too. I feel so wronged. I want to marry you, but it’s like Eleanor is always between us.”

“Please, forgive me.”

Peter rubbed his temples, looking exhausted. “Don’t cry anymore.”

He looked so tired, he couldn’t even find the energy to comfort her.

Jessie knew when to stop. She wiped her face with a tissue and tried to pull herself together. “Is Autumn feeling any better?”

“A bit. The doctor said she should be able to go home in about a week.”

Jessie nodded. “Olga’s been worried sick at home. You should go stay with her. I can take care of things here at the hospital.”

“Not so fast. Stay and eat with me, okay?” Max said, his voice gentle. He could tell something was off.

Eleanor wasn’t the type to turn down kindness. She sat down, but picked at her food without any real appetite. She zoned out until Max put a piece of fish into her bowl.

She blinked back to the moment. “Thank you. Sorry, I’m just not myself today.”

Max shook his head. “No need to apologize. Everyone has days like that.”

Suddenly, Eleanor remembered she hadn’t really thanked him yet.

“Mr. Clarkson, thank you again for helping me.”

Max raised an eyebrow. “Oh? You mean the bank statements?”

She nodded quickly. “Yes. Without them, the judge might still be doubting whether he cheated.”

Max’s lips curled into a small smile. “Don’t mention it. It was no big deal.”
