From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 16

Eleanor felt the chill in her heart start to fade. “Jared, calm down. The doctor said you have to watch your emotions.”

Jared took a slow breath. His chest finally settled.

“Mom, I already told you. I’m not going to apologize to her.

I’m not saying sorry for something I didn’t do.”

“And I’m divorcing Peter.”

Juliana, who had been furious a second ago, just stared, her hands shaking. “Have you lost your mind?”

She looked at Eleanor like she’d grown another head. “If you divorce Peter, what about Jared’s medical bills?”

“I’ll handle that. You don’t have to worry. But I’m divorcing Peter. That’s final.”

“Mom, I’m your daughter. Jessie isn’t. If you keep taking someone else’s side, then I’ll have to act like I don’t have a mother anymore.”

Eleanor softened when she looked at Jared. “I’m heading out. You need to rest. I’ll come visit again soon.”

“Okay. Eat something, alright? Take care of yourself.”

A flicker of worry crossed his face. “No matter what you decide, I’ve got your back.”

Eleanor ruffled his hair and walked out, not sparing her mother another glance.

Once Eleanor was gone, Jared turned to Juliana, disapproval written all over his face. “Mom, do you remember? Eleanor started working part-time at sixteen. She worked all through college and gave her earnings to the family. Treating her like this… it hurts her, you know.”

Juliana pouted, knowing she had no good excuse. “Alright, alright, you don’t need to butt into these problems. You just focus on getting better.”

“You’re the most important person to me, you know that?”

Jared pressed his lips together. Sometimes, his mom’s love felt like a weight he couldn’t carry.

He wished she would just love his sister a little more.

“Mommie Jessie, you’re back!”

Olga rushed over, eyes wide with worry. “What happened to your hand? Did the mean mommy do that to you?”

Tears welled up in Olga’s eyes, her little face scrunched with concern.

Jessie gave her a gentle smile. “Don’t cry, sweetheart. It’s nothing. I’m okay, really.”

One was a divorce agreement. The other was a report from the hospital—it was about a miscarriage.

Jessie’s heart thudded in her chest. She could hear Eleanor’s words from the other day ringing in her ears.

So it was true. There was no baby.

Eleanor’s only leverage was gone.

Did Eleanor really think she could use the miscarriage to make Peter feel guilty?

Jessie wasn’t about to give her that chance.

Without a sound, she slipped the hospital report into her pocket and slid the divorce agreement back where she’d found it.

She tucked the envelope into the drawer.

“Mommie Jessie, where are you?”

Jessie straightened her clothes and hurried out, acting like she’d never been there at all.

“I’m here, Olga. I’m right here.”
