Jessie Goff waited by the preschool gate, scrolling through her phone while keeping an eye out for Olga. She spotted the Clarkson family driver pulling up and gave him a quick nod.
“You can go ahead and head back. I’m taking Olga out to eat before we go home,” Jessie said, tossing her hair over her shoulder.
The driver hesitated, fidgeting with his keys. “Um... Jessie, maybe you should call Autumn and let her know? Just to be safe.”
Jessie rolled her eyes, already annoyed. “Seriously? You think I’d do something to Olga?”
He looked flustered. “It’s just... Autumn told me I have to bring Olga straight back. It’s always been the rule since Eleanor set it.”
Jessie shot him a glare, but she pulled out her phone and dialed Autumn anyway. After a short, awkward pause, Autumn agreed.
Jessie hung up and looked at the driver, a little smug. “There, you heard her. I can take Olga now, right?”
“I’m sorry, Jessie. We’re just following the rules,” he said before heading off.
Once he was gone, Jessie took a deep breath and tried to shake off her irritation. When Olga came running out of the school, her whole face lit up the second she saw Jessie.
“Mommie Jessie! Why are you picking me up today?” Olga squealed, practically bouncing on the spot.
Jessie crouched down and scooped her up, giving her a playful nudge on the nose. “Because I heard someone made me a special hair clip. I just couldn’t wait to get my present.”
Olga giggled, hugging her tight.
Jessie took her to that pizza place Olga loved, the one with the red booths and the smell of melted cheese in the air. Olga’s eyes went wide at the sight of her slice, and she bit in with a happy little sigh. “So yummy!”
Jessie laughed. “Slow down, kiddo. If you eat too much, your tummy’s going to be upset tonight.”
Jessie bit her lip, looking down at her hands. “But lately... your grandma doesn’t really like me.”
She knew Autumn had it out for her. If she wanted a chance, she had to win Olga over.
Sure enough, Olga’s eyes filled with panic. “That can’t be true! Grandma loves me best. She always listens to me. I’ll talk to her tonight, okay?”
She said it with such confidence, like she really believed she could fix anything.
Jessie reached over and squeezed Olga’s hand. “Don’t do that, sweetie. If you say something, it might just make things worse.”
Olga blinked, confused. “Then what can I do? I don’t want anyone else. I want you to be my mommy, Mommie Jessie.”
Jessie smiled softly, brushing Olga’s hair behind her ear. She leaned in, lowering her voice to a secret. “Listen, your grandma might bring someone new to meet your daddy. When that happens, I’ll tell you what to do, okay?”
