From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 169

Max ended the call and slid back into the driver’s seat. “I’m sorry. This was the company’s mistake. I promise you’ll have an explanation before work tomorrow.”

Eleanor looked at his tense face and caught the anger simmering just below the surface. Suddenly, it all made sense. The lock hadn’t just broken by accident. Someone had done it on purpose.

She gave him a small smile. “Okay.”

There was something about Max that made her trust him without question. Now that he knew, she was sure he’d take it seriously. There was no way this would get swept under the rug.

Max’s jaw was still set as he stared out the windshield. He was angry, and not just a little. Someone was treating the company like a joke. It didn’t take much to guess who would go after Eleanor. The list was painfully short.

The drive home was quiet. Max didn’t say a word, and Eleanor was too tired to talk anyway. She dozed off, only waking up when the car rolled into the underground garage.

She checked her phone. It was barely five minutes to midnight.

“Go on up. Get some sleep.”

Eleanor paused for half a second. Part of her wanted to ask if he was coming upstairs too, but she bit her tongue. That wasn’t her place.

“Thank you, Mr. Clarkson. I owe you again.”

Max’s eyes caught hers, steady and deep. “You don’t owe me anything. This is just what I should do.”

Eleanor felt her heart skip. She ducked her head and hurried into the elevator, too flustered to look back. She was scared he’d see everything she was feeling.

Max turned the car around and drove back to the old family house.

Hunter had just finished a long meeting. He rubbed his forehead and headed for a late night snack, only to hear the front door. When he saw Max, he stopped in his tracks.

“Max?”

Max strode into the living room and dropped a stack of photos onto the coffee table in front of his brother.

Her face went pale. “Max...”

“Don’t call me Max. Right now, you need to call me Mr. Clarkson. As a shareholder, I want to know what these photos are about.”

He sounded so formal it made her want to shrink. Katie swallowed hard, completely lost for words.

Hunter rubbed his temples, looking at his daughter like she was giving him a migraine. “Katie, do you realize what this is called?”

“Workplace bullying.”

“If this were an international company, what you did would be enough to get you fired on the spot. Those companies care about their work culture. Bullying or any kind of discrimination is a big deal. It sticks with you.”

Katie mumbled, “But we’re not,” barely loud enough for anyone to hear.
