Jessie gave a little smirk.
"Eleanor, you must be feeling pretty good about yourself right now, huh? All proud and satisfied."
Eleanor folded her arms, not backing down.
"So what if I am?"
Jessie handed her a folder.
"Want to see what's inside?"
Eleanor eyed her suspiciously but took the folder anyway. The second she glanced at the documents, her face changed.
"You've been running yourself ragged for your mom's family all these years. Did it ever occur to you that Benjamin isn't your real father?"
Jessie let out a low laugh.
"I have to say, Juliana was way wilder in her youth than I thought. You’re not even Jared’s real sister. Your mom had you with someone else. Did you know that?"
A sharp ache hit Eleanor in the chest, but she forced herself to stay calm.
"Why would you even look into her past?"
"You really expect me to believe all this just because you handed me some paperwork?"
Jessie’s smile was cold.
"I have my reasons. I just couldn't understand why any mother would treat her daughter like that. You should’ve seen how desperate she was when she came to apologize to me. It was honestly pathetic."
"Let me guess. She wanted you to apologize to me too?"
She saw Eleanor’s face flicker.
"So what? You think that’s enough?"
Jessie’s smile grew.
"Aren't you even a little curious about your real dad? He’s alive, you know. He lives in Westfield. For all you know, he might show up and want to meet his daughter soon."
"Hey, do you know any good real estate agents? Or have a lead on an apartment? I think it’s time I started looking for a new place."
Peter Clarkson was finally out of her hair, but it didn’t feel right to be living in the same neighborhood as Max anymore. It was time to put a little space between them.
"Looking for a new place? Actually, why not move into my building? It’d be fun to have you nearby." Yolanda lived alone and seemed genuinely excited by the idea.
Eleanor perked up.
"That sounds perfect. I have time this weekend to check it out."
She wasn’t interested in any of the properties she and Peter still co-owned. She planned to sell everything and cash out. She didn’t need all that real estate. Not now. Not when she was finally free.
They kept things low-key, sipping just a few drinks before calling it a night.
Back at home, Eleanor glanced at the clock. She’d thought about telling Max in person, but after a moment, she decided a message would be easier.
Mr. Clarkson, thank you for everything lately. I’ve decided it’s time for me to move out.
