Peter picked a quiet, upscale club for their meeting, a place with enough privacy to keep things contained. He brought his lawyer along, and Jessie Goff showed up as well. There was no pretending today, everyone knew exactly what side they were on.
Eleanor understood this wasn’t just a casual chat, so she asked Mr. Sidler to come with her. Together, they walked into the private room.
Peter looked up with a hint of a smirk. “Well, Eleanor, you finally decided to grace us with your presence.”
She smiled, unbothered. “Sorry about that. I’ve just been swamped lately. I’m sure you understand, Mr. Clarkson.”
Peter and Jessie had both canceled on her plenty of times, always using work as an excuse. She was just giving them a taste of their own medicine.
Jessie rolled her eyes and kept quiet. Today wasn’t about her.
Peter’s lawyer gave them a polite nod. “Ms. Rolland, according to the court’s decision, you’re entitled to sixty percent. However, Mr. Clarkson’s shares can’t be transferred easily. So, we propose a cash payout reflecting sixty percent of the current market value. That comes out to about two billion dollars. It’s a very generous offer.”
Two billion. Eleanor’s eyebrows lifted. She hadn’t realized just how valuable Peter’s company really was.
“I’m not agreeing to that,” she said, her voice cool.
“The court ruled for a sixty percent split of the assets, not just sixty percent of the market value, isn’t that right?”
The lawyer fell silent, caught off guard.
Linden gave a relaxed smile. “We’re all lawyers here, so let’s not get caught up in technicalities. Either you follow the ruling to the letter, or if you don’t want to appeal, we’ll just have the court enforce it.”
Peter’s lawyer glanced at him. Peter’s jaw was clenched, his face tense. He was clearly fighting to keep his anger in check.
Eleanor didn’t want to keep dragging things out. She just wanted her share and to move on. “Or, Peter, if you’d rather not pay, make me the majority shareholder in your company instead.”
She looked him dead in the eye. “My first order of business would be firing Jessie Goff.”
Peter’s teeth were practically grinding. “Eleanor, don’t take this too far.”
Linden smiled. “You’re welcome. It’s what I do.”
“Do you want a ride?”
Eleanor shook her head. She wanted a few minutes to herself, to let it all sink in and maybe even celebrate a little. “No, I’ll just grab a cab.”
Linden gave her a little wave and walked away.
Eleanor stepped outside, took a deep breath, and let the fresh air fill her lungs. For the first time in ages, she felt truly free.
She didn’t expect Jessie Goff to come running out after her.
“Eleanor!”
Eleanor turned, her eyes cool and steady. “What is it? You coming out here to defend him?”
