When Max came down from upstairs, everyone glanced his way.
Eleanor felt awkward. She knew something about her boss that she probably shouldn’t, and now she couldn’t help but wonder if she’d have to watch her back. Tim looked at Max with sympathy, thinking what a shame it was for someone so good-looking to have that kind of problem. Only Marleigh seemed genuinely hopeful.
“Dr. Thompson…” Marleigh started, her eyes bright.
Dr. Thompson cleared his throat, clearly feeling out of place. “Everything’s fine. No need to worry.”
Marleigh’s face lit up. As long as there was a chance, she didn’t care how long it took.
Dr. Thompson had planned to leave, but Tim convinced him to stay for dinner. When they sat down, Dr. Thompson slipped into a corner seat, avoiding any chance of sitting across from Max. That would have been way too awkward.
Eleanor pulled out a chair and settled in next to Laura. Max, eyes dark and impossible to read, sat directly across from her. Marleigh took the seat between Max and Dr. Thompson, and Tim, naturally, sat at the head of the table.
Eleanor mostly kept quiet, listening and eating, only chiming in with a smile when someone spoke to her. The conversation drifted back to Max.
“I heard George had an asthma attack in the elevator the other day,” Tim said.
Marleigh gave a small smile. “Yeah, but someone helped him out. He’s okay now.”
Tim nodded. “He should probably have an assistant with some medical training. Just to be safe.”
“If whoever helped him knew who they’d saved, they’d probably be thrilled,” Tim added, knowing full well how much George hated owing anyone a favor. He always paid people back ten times over.
Max and Marleigh exchanged a look, but neither said anything else.
So she and Max headed off together.
…
“Relax, I’m not going to bite,” Max said with a grin, noticing how stiff she looked.
“Want to try the boat? It’s safe, I promise.”
Eleanor nodded. “Okay.”
She actually felt more comfortable with a little distance, letting the breeze on the water distract her. But as soon as she sat down across from Max in her bright orange life vest, she wondered if this had been a mistake. It wasn’t like she could enjoy the view. All she could feel was Max watching her, his gaze so intense it felt like it might burn right through her.
