Tim invited everyone to stay for dinner, but Nate politely turned him down, and Max left with his mom too.
That left just Eleanor.
Honestly, Eleanor had planned to leave if Max stuck around, so their exit felt like perfect timing. It also gave Tim a chance to have a real heart-to-heart with his student.
On the drive home, Marleigh shot Max a look. “Why did you rush off so fast? Didn’t you want to chat more with Eleanor?”
“Mom, didn’t you notice she was getting annoyed with me? You have to let people breathe.”
Marleigh didn’t really get the whole space thing. She hesitated, then glanced at Max. “That Dr. Thompson… he said your condition…”
“There’s nothing they can do, Mom. You need to let it go.”
“And about you secretly bringing in a doctor today… I’d really prefer not to have to drop my pants in front of a stranger again. Can you at least let me keep a little dignity?”
Marleigh fell silent. “I… I just want you to get better.”
“It’s hopeless. At this point, I just hope whoever I end up with won’t mind.”
Marleigh had never heard Max talk like that before. In this whole city, who would actually look down on her son? But this illness… she let out a long sigh.
Fine, she’d stop meddling.
“Alright, I won’t get involved anymore. As long as you find yourself a wife.”
If Eleanor ever married into their family, Marleigh was determined to spoil her rotten. She’d make sure Eleanor never missed out on a single thing everyone else had.
Eleanor had no idea she was about to become the center of everyone’s attention.
“Eleanor, did that jerk transfer your money? I couldn’t ask earlier with so many people around.”
Eleanor smiled. “He sent part of it, but there’s still some left. I didn’t want his shares, so I told him to give me cash. He’ll need about a week to get it together. Don’t worry, if he tries to cheat me, I’ll just take him to court.”
Suddenly, her phone buzzed.
[Eleanor, where are you? Something happened at school. Can you come to the back gate?]
She jumped out of bed immediately. She tried to call Jared, but he hung up right away.
Her anxiety spiked. Jared was staying at school, wasn’t he? Could he be in trouble?
Eleanor grabbed her phone, threw on a jacket, and hurried out the door.
At that moment, back at the Rolland house, Jared was frantic.
“Mom, why’d you take my phone?”
Juliana’s eyes were cold and determined. “Jared, stay out of this. Stay home. Whatever happens, you know nothing. Got it?”
