A tiny crack broke through Max’s usual cool exterior.
His voice was low, almost rough, and his heart thudded so loud he was sure she could hear it. “What did you just say?”
He needed her to repeat it, to prove to himself that he hadn’t imagined it.
It was rare to see Max lose his composure. Eleanor hesitated, her cheeks tinged pink, giving away how nervous she was. She took a breath and tried again.
“I asked… Max, the contract marriage you mentioned before. Are you still considering it?”
Out of her entire sentence, only one word echoed in Max’s mind: marriage.
She agreed. She actually agreed to marry him.
It was like a coin he’d been flipping in his heart finally hit the ground, striking something deep inside him and setting off a melody he hadn’t heard before.
Max pressed his lips together, fighting back the smile threatening to give him away. He tried to sound chill, like this was no big deal. “Yeah. I’ve been waiting for you to say yes.”
Eleanor’s ears were burning. “Okay. If you have time, can you draw up a prenup? Once we look it over and settle the details, we can get married. Is that alright?”
He swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing. The words came out soft and steady. “Alright.”
When Max left, Eleanor finally exhaled. She’d been so nervous her palms were sweating. She pressed her hands to her cheeks, feeling both bashful and a little mortified. Did she come across as too forward? Too eager? Maybe he thought she was desperate.
Ten minutes later, Max walked back into the hospital room, some papers in his hand.
“Here’s the prenup. I had my assistant bring it over. Take a look. If anything makes you uncomfortable, we can change it.”
So this was what having a super-efficient assistant was like.
Eleanor took the papers without thinking much about it.
The agreement was clear. Everything she owned before the marriage would stay hers. Max wouldn’t touch a cent. But for his assets, he’d written that they’d split everything fifty-fifty.
Eleanor shook her head. “No.”
Before she could collect her thoughts, the next clause jumped out at her.
[Even though this marriage is based on an agreement, both parties are required to fulfill their marital duties at least five days a week. So, both sides need to keep themselves physically and emotionally clean.]
Eleanor coughed. “This fifth rule… isn’t it kind of a lot?”
Max shrugged like he already knew she’d ask. He smiled, calm as ever. “I don’t think it’s too much. Once we’re married, we’re a real couple. We can both get a check-up beforehand. I’ll make sure I’m healthy.”
Wait, hold on…
“But I thought… you couldn’t?”
He raised an eyebrow, looking amused. “Who told you that? Just because I can’t have kids doesn’t mean I can’t do everything else, right?”
