From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 204

When Max walked in, he didn’t expect to see Peter Clarkson sitting in the living room. There was a chill in his eyes as he let out a quiet, annoyed laugh.

Peter nodded politely, pretending not to notice the frost in Max’s stare. He knew Max still held a grudge, but as long as their interests didn’t clash, Peter believed the tension would eventually fade. If Max could read his mind, though, he’d probably call him hopelessly naïve.

George didn’t bother with small talk. He looked at Max and said, “Getting married is a big deal. You didn’t think to tell your family first?”

Peter’s eyes widened. Max was married? In their circle, Max was famous for being untouchable. Any woman sent his way ended up on his blacklist, and over the years, rumors swirled that he liked men instead. None of it ever seemed to faze him. He was a mystery, through and through.

Max’s voice was calm. “Yeah. I got married. My wife is divorced, and we already have the marriage license. If you disagree, it’s too late.”

People were already shocked that Max got married at all, but hearing that he’d chosen a woman who’d been married before? That was next level. Was he out of his mind? Everyone was thinking it.

Marleigh’s fingers tightened a little around her teacup. She gave Max a look. “Watch your tone with your father.”

George’s face turned red. “What else is there to say? You clearly don’t care what I think anymore. Getting married is a huge life event. You just did it, no discussion, and picked a divorcée on top of that. Aren’t you embarrassed?”

The faint smile on Max’s lips disappeared. His whole demeanor turned cold.

“Is being divorced so shameful? I think cheating is way more embarrassing, don’t you?”

The air in the room went heavy. Everyone knew who he meant.

Peter’s heart skipped a beat.

Max turned toward him. “Dad, you’re awfully forgiving of a cheater, but you’re so critical of your own daughter-in-law. Why is that?”

George just smiled. These two high-profile projects were enough to repay Peter for saving his life, at least in his eyes.

George kept things clear. Peter saving him was one thing, but letting him back into the Clarkson family was another. He wasn’t about to risk his relationship with Max for someone on the outside.

Peter understood it wouldn’t be easy to be accepted by the Clarksons. Still, this was a start. He glanced upstairs and couldn’t help but wonder. Max, married? Who could his wife be? He quietly tried to remember anyone in their circle who had recently gotten divorced.

After lunch, Peter still hadn’t seen Max come back down. He excused himself politely and left.

On the way home, he called Jessie Goff to spill everything that had happened.

Jessie bit her lip, thinking for a moment. “Peter, do you want to come over and meet my family?”
