Peter was caught off guard for a second, but then he smiled. “Let’s save it for another day, Jessie. I’d feel awkward showing up without a gift. Next time, I’ll come by in person to ask your dad properly.”
That promise was all Jessie needed to feel at ease. She ended the call, her worries settling.
When she got home and saw her dad, she went straight to the point. “Dad, when do you have some free time? Peter wants to come over and meet you.”
Otto’s face fell. He was not happy about this at all. “Jessie, do you really want to marry Peter Clarkson?”
First she’d married Grady, then she wanted to marry his brother right after Grady’s death. How could anyone look at this and not judge? Otto couldn’t help but feel embarrassed by the whole thing.
“Dad, he’s divorced and I’m single now. Why can’t we get married?” Jessie asked, her voice stubborn.
Otto met her eyes, his expression heavy. Just a few months ago, she was crying her heart out over Grady. Was she really over it this quickly?
Adam, her brother, tried to lighten things up. “Dad, Grady just passed away. Jessie was a mess. If Peter can help her get back on her feet, maybe that’s a good thing.”
He had a point. Otto had honestly thought his daughter might never recover.
“We’ll talk about this another time,” Otto said. He still wasn’t willing to give his approval.
Jessie mulled it over, then called Peter again. She didn’t have the courage to tell him that her father wasn’t on board. Instead, she suggested he meet with her grandmother Paola first.
Peter didn’t suspect a thing. Even though Paola was just her grandma, he treated the meeting with care and respect.
That seemed to soften Paola a little. “If you treat Jessie well, that’s good. Still, your father only wants the best for you. Jessie, talk to him honestly. I’m sure he’ll listen.”
Jessie realized her grandma wasn’t going to step in, and she felt frustrated. “Paola, you just don’t get it. Is it because Eleanor helped you once that you’re still taking her side? She and Peter never fit together. All she cared about was herself, she barely looked after her own daughter, and in the end she just wanted to fight Peter over money. She’s always been greedy.”
Paola waved her hand, tired of the argument. “Let it go. You’re both moving on and getting married. There’s no point dragging up the past.”
Peter suddenly tensed. “Paola, who else is getting married?”
Paola sighed. “I ran into Eleanor at lunch today. She’s already remarried. As for your wedding, Jessie, it’s not up to me. You’ll need your father’s blessing.”
Peter’s hands tightened, his whole face turning cold. No way. Eleanor… How could she possibly be married?
