In the study of the old Clarkson family house, Marleigh closed the door behind her and looked straight at Max. “Max, did you actually marry Eleanor?”
Max grinned and handed her the marriage certificate. “Here. See for yourself.”
Marleigh’s hands trembled a little as she opened the red booklet. The photo inside showed Max and Eleanor standing side by side, both smiling so sweetly. Instantly, she felt relieved. Max was finally married... at last.
But her relief didn’t last long. She eyed him suspiciously. “This isn’t fake, is it?”
Max rolled his eyes. “Mom, if you’re real, then so is this certificate.”
She huffed, smacking his arm lightly. “Watch your mouth! Is that any way to talk to your mom?”
Marleigh hesitated for a moment, then jumped to the next problem. “So, what’s your plan for telling your dad?”
Max’s smile was half playful, half serious. “Mom, we already have the certificate. Do I really need to convince him now? If Dad doesn’t agree, fine. I’ll just give Eleanor half my assets.”
Marleigh gaped at him. She could tell this troublemaker of a son was just trying to rile up his father.
“Alright, alright, don’t be so dramatic,” she said, waving him off. “Your dad’s stubborn, not as easygoing as I am. Let’s do this. Tomorrow, find some time and take me to meet Eleanor. Since you’re married, have you given her a wedding gift yet?”
She looked him dead in the eye. “I don’t care if she’s divorced. If you ever even think about treating her badly or cheating, I won’t let it slide. The Clarkson family has always had clear rules. Got it?”
Max nodded, his eyes calm and steady. “I won’t cheat. And Mom, can you please stop comparing me to those losers?”
Marleigh gave a satisfied nod. “Good. Now get out of here before your father sees you. I’ll handle everything else.”
Max slipped away, barely making a sound. Not long after, George came storming in, looking for a fight, but the room was empty.
“Where’s Max?” he demanded, turning to his wife.
The next day, when she checked her phone, she saw a bunch of missed calls from Max. She quickly called him back.
“Hello, Mr. Clarkson,” she said, her voice a little shy.
Max laughed softly. “Mrs. Clarkson, don’t you think that’s a little too formal now?”
Eleanor hesitated, then smiled. “Should I call you Max instead?”
He let out a low laugh. “I wouldn’t mind if you called me your husband.”
Her cheeks went bright red. “Did you call me for something yesterday?”
Max’s teasing faded and his tone grew gentle. “My mom wants to meet you. Are you free for dinner tonight?”
