Eleanor pressed her lips together. “Already? That’s so soon.” Honestly, she still didn’t feel ready.
Max’s low, rough voice came through the phone. “Don’t worry, Mrs. Clarkson. My mom already likes you.”
His words sent a weird spark up her neck, making her freeze for a second.
“Alright. Got it.”
After hanging up, Eleanor got herself together and headed out. She left so early that when Max showed up to give her a lift, he found out she was already gone. He just shook his head and thought, How can my wife be this adorable?
All day at work, Eleanor felt on edge. Every time the director mentioned Max during meetings, her heart started racing, like she was hiding some big secret and was about to get caught.
Later that afternoon, the director announced, “We’re having a department dinner tonight. Let your families know you’ll be late.”
Eleanor hesitated, then went to the director’s office.
The director frowned at her. “This is the first team dinner of the quarter. You’ve been here two months. Can’t you stay?”
Eleanor smiled politely, but her voice was firm. “I’m really sorry, Director. I have something important tonight. I can’t miss it. I’m really sorry.”
The director’s tone went a little cold. “What’s so important?”
“It’s my first official meeting with my mother-in-law.”
The director paused, then just nodded. “That’s… actually pretty important.”
With her leave approved, Eleanor packed up and left right on time. As she was heading out, a coworker called after her, “Eleanor, did you forget about the team dinner?”
She smiled. “I took the night off. You guys enjoy.”
She walked out of the elevator, feeling lighter, then spotted Max’s car parked near the side entrance across from her building. She glanced around, then hurried over and slipped into the back seat.
When she walked into the private room, Mrs. Clarkson’s face lit up in a big, welcoming smile.
“Eleanor, you’re here!” Marleigh slid out the chair next to her, patting it. “Come, sit by me.”
“You’re a good kid,” she said warmly. “Our Max knows what he’s doing.”
Eleanor hadn’t expected Marleigh to be so open. She knew all about Eleanor’s past.
“Mrs. Clarkson, you don’t mind that I was married before?”
Marleigh squeezed her hand gently. “Not at all, Eleanor. I already like you so much. Why would I care about that?”
Honestly, Marleigh was more worried that Eleanor would mind Max’s own issues.
