From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 209

Her wide, innocent eyes lifted to meet his, silently asking what he was up to.

Max just raised an eyebrow. “Mom, has your driver shown up yet?”

Eleanor snapped out of her daze. Oh, right. She was supposed to be playing the part of a loving wife. Being too cold wouldn’t look right.

Marleigh’s eyes landed on their hands, fingers laced together, and she beamed. This made her so happy. At least it looked like Max was taking this marriage seriously. He wasn’t just pretending for their sake.

“The driver’s here. I’ll get going now. You two should get home and rest early.”

Eleanor said goodbye to Marleigh with perfect politeness. Even after her car had pulled away, her hand stayed in Max’s.

Max grinned. “Let’s go, Mrs. Clarkson. Time for us to head home too.”

Eleanor’s delicate wrist still wore that ridiculously expensive Imperial Green bracelet. When it brushed against Max’s silver watch, it made a light, pleasant sound, but to Eleanor, it felt like a warning.

She quickly pulled her hand from his and steadied the bracelet, being extra careful. “This is too much,” she muttered. “I’m scared I’ll damage it.”

Max frowned, rubbing his thumb over his palm like he missed her touch. “It’s not a big deal, just worth a couple billion. And it’s not even unique. Jessie has one too. Yours looks better, though.”

Eleanor went stiff. She didn’t even dare to move. Did he just say the thing on her wrist was worth billions?

“Where’s the box?” she asked, digging through her bag in a panic, ready to put it away for safekeeping.

“Just wear it,” Max said, stepping closer and covering her wrist with his big, warm hand. “Don’t overthink it. Bracelets are meant to be worn, not locked away. Besides, it’s not like we’re hurting for a few billion.”

[No need. You can just send me the paperwork. I’ll confirm the numbers on my phone.]

Peter read her cool reply and felt even more annoyed. So now that they were divorced, they couldn’t even meet face to face?

He typed slowly, choosing his words with care.

[Come to the office. Unless you don’t want the rest of your money.]

Eleanor clicked her tongue in annoyance. Sometimes she really didn’t get this guy. Before the divorce, he was all about Jessie and barely acknowledged Eleanor, didn’t even want her in his office. Now that they were over, he insisted on talking in person about things that could be handled online.

[Fine. I expect you to pay up tomorrow. I really never want to see you again after this.]
