Eleanor was just about to clock out when her phone rang. The caller ID flashed Ms. Truman.
“Hello, is this Jared’s sister?” the voice asked.
Eleanor’s heart skipped a beat. “Yes, I’m his sister. Did something happen to Jared at school?”
“There’s been a little trouble. He got into a fight with another student. Could you come down to the school?”
Eleanor hung up, flagged down a cab, and headed straight for Jared’s school.
Ms. Truman honestly never saw this coming. The two best students in her class, actually getting into a fight. This time, it was the new kid who threw the first punch, and the other boy, Grant Goff, came from a family with serious money. Jared was in over his head.
She’d already tried to talk to Jared, but he wouldn’t say a word. The only emergency contact on file was his sister. Ms. Truman had no idea if this girl could help.
Grant sat there with a dark bruise on his cheek, looking annoyed. “Why am I getting punished, Ms. Truman? I want to go home. I wasn’t even the one who started it. Tons of people saw it—Jared just hit me for no reason. How does someone like that even get into our school? My mom’s on her way, and she’s not as easy to talk to as you.”
Ms. Truman felt herself getting irritated by Grant’s attitude. She’d never liked how arrogant he was. He was always going on about the Goff name, like having a rich dad made him untouchable.
In a city like this one, people with money and power were everywhere. Ms. Truman glanced at Jared, who had his own share of bruises, and couldn’t help but sigh. She’d seen his files—his mom was a retired worker, his sister just a junior employee at some company. There was no way they could stand up to Grant’s family.
She knew she’d have to look out for Jared, at least a little.
Suddenly, a man in a sharp suit walked in, moving with the kind of confidence that made everyone else feel small. He saw Grant’s face and his frown deepened. “Who did this? Grant, who hit you?”
Grant rolled his eyes and pointed at the messy-haired boy next to him. “Dad, it was him. The transfer kid.”
Wesley’s eyes narrowed as he looked Jared up and down. Both boys wore the same uniform, but Jared’s shoes were cheap, unbranded. Poor, obviously.
Wesley gave a dismissive little laugh and turned to Ms. Truman. “So, now transfer students can just attack people and the school does nothing? Look at my son’s face. Shouldn’t that kid be expelled?”
He came in swinging, making it clear he expected things to go his way. Wesley might lecture Grant at home, but no one else was allowed to touch his son.
“I’m taking Grant to the hospital to get this checked out. And I expect the other family to pay the bills. Expulsion is the least you can do.”
A record like that would make it nearly impossible for Jared to find another school.
Ms. Truman was stuck, not sure what else to do, when a gentle knock sounded on the door.
“Ms. Truman? I’m Jared’s sister, Eleanor. Can I come in?”
Grant’s eyes went wide. Jared’s sister was… beautiful.
Wesley turned at the sound of her voice. Her face was calm and striking, her amber eyes clear and bright. She had a slim waist and long legs, and for a second, Wesley couldn’t look away. This was the poor kid’s sister?
Wesley’s stare was so intense that Eleanor frowned. She kept her distance as she stepped inside.
“Ms. Truman, you said on the phone that my brother was in a fight. But he’s never been the type to start trouble. He’s not in the best health, either. I think there may have been a misunderstanding. Is there a camera in the classroom? Maybe we can check the footage before deciding who was really at fault.”
Jared’s eyes stung with embarrassment. He hated that he was dragging Eleanor into more problems.
“Eleanor…”
She gave him a gentle look. “Don’t worry. As long as I’m here, no one’s going to blame you for something you didn’t do.”
