“Well…” Ms. Truman hesitated, her voice a little uncertain. “Ms. Rolland, there’s a camera in the classroom, but it doesn’t record audio. I’ve already checked the footage. All it shows is your brother throwing the first punch.”
The truth was, Ms. Truman felt a little sympathy for Jared. She knew exactly what kind of troublemaker Grant Goff was. She hadn’t planned to mention the camera at all, but now Jared’s sister had brought it up herself.
Wesley let out a cold laugh. “Ms. Truman, why didn’t you mention the camera earlier? So, Ms. Rolland, now that we have proof, what are you going to do?”
Eleanor narrowed her eyes. This wasn’t playing out the way she’d expected. She squeezed her hands together, steadying herself. “What about the other students?”
“Ms. Truman, didn’t anyone in the class see what really happened?”
Grant gave a lazy smile. “Of course. Chad saw everything.”
Jared’s head jerked up, his eyes burning with anger as he glared at Grant.
Eleanor didn’t understand why her brother was so upset, but she reached over and gently patted his back. “Jared, remember what the doctor said. Don’t get too worked up. Whatever he says, just ignore it. I’m here.”
Jared took a deep breath, trying to calm down. “I know, Eleanor.”
He knew exactly what Grant was like. From the very first day he transferred to this school, Grant and his little gang had been looking for ways to mess with him. Jared just wanted to keep his head down and race through his classes, hoping he could skip a grade and get away from Grant for good.
He never expected things at home would fall apart like this, or that Chad would let something slip, giving Grant exactly what he needed to start trouble. Jared could take being picked on himself, but when it came to his sister, he just couldn’t let it go.
Wesley looked at Ms. Truman. “Well, what are you waiting for? Bring this Chad kid in.”
Ms. Truman didn’t have much choice. She went out and found a class monitor, asking her to go get Chad.
When Chad walked in and saw both sets of parents, he shrank back a little, glancing nervously at Grant, then at Jared. He looked miserable. If only he hadn’t run his mouth. Now he wished he could take it all back.
Grant saw him and grinned. “Chad, you saw the whole thing. Jared punched me, right? Why don’t you tell the teacher what happened? Did I make anything up?”
Chad looked torn. He glanced at Jared, unsure what to do. If he told the truth, Grant would definitely hold it against him. He’d only been sitting next to Jared for a couple of months, and they weren’t exactly close, but Jared had always been patient and helped him with his schoolwork.
Jared didn’t want Eleanor to hear the kind of things Grant had said. “It’s nothing. Grant Goff had it coming,” he muttered.
Chad stared at the floor. “Ms. Truman… Grant didn’t really say anything.”
“Am I?” Eleanor replied. “Ms. Truman, why don’t you go ask the whole class, one by one? I don’t believe there isn’t a single student willing to tell the truth.”
They might only be teenagers, but at sixteen or seventeen, they knew right from wrong. If not one of them could speak up, that would be truly sad.
Ms. Truman stood up. “Alright. I’ll go ask them right now.”
Wesley narrowed his eyes at Eleanor. “Ms. Rolland, do you really have to make this such a big deal?”
“If Jared apologizes to Grant, I’ll drop it. I won’t ask for him to be expelled either.”
Eleanor smiled, almost lazily. “Sir, Jared was wrong to hit someone, but your son spreading rumors is even worse. I trust the school knows which is more serious. And if you use your influence to pressure the school into punishing Jared unfairly, I’ll take it up with the school board.”
“You seem to be someone with a reputation. Are you sure you want me to make this public?”
Wesley was speechless. He never thought he’d be threatened by a young woman like her.
