From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 221

“Is this enough?”

Max’s eyes widened for a second, then softened with happiness. He gently pulled Eleanor onto his lap, settling her sideways so she fit perfectly against him. His face inched closer, and then his lips found hers, warm and soft.

Eleanor hadn’t expected Max to turn the tables like that. At first, she was caught off guard, her heart racing, but soon she melted into the kiss, losing herself in the moment. Without thinking, her arms slipped around his neck and the kiss grew deeper, more intense.

She only pulled away when she needed to catch her breath. Reality crept back in and she pressed her hands against his waist, trying to steady herself.

Max let her go slowly, his voice low and teasing. “What’s wrong? Had enough?”

Eleanor was still a little breathless. “I have work tomorrow. I should go to bed.”

Max touched his lips, a quiet laugh rumbling in his chest. She gets this flustered just from a kiss? Looks like I’m going to need a lot more practice with her. What’s she going to do with me in the future?

The next morning, the housekeeper cooked up breakfast just the way Eleanor and Max liked it. Eleanor went to wake Jared, and the three of them sat down together.

They ate in silence for a bit until Eleanor spoke up. “What time is your evening class?”

“Six o’clock,” Jared answered.

Eleanor did the math in her head. “I’ll drive you back to school at six, then.”

Max chimed in, “That might be cutting it close. You finish work at five, and traffic could be bad. I’m working from home today. I’ll take him.”

Eleanor hesitated. She’d already taken too many days off recently. She didn’t want her personal life slowing down her research. She bit her lip, thinking it over. “Jared, what do you think?”

Jared honestly didn’t want to trouble Eleanor. Even though he was reluctant, he nodded. “Let Max take me. Thanks, Max.”

Max shot Jared a sideways look, half amused. The kid really didn’t sound thrilled.

To keep things from getting awkward, Max had the housekeeper bring lunch straight to Jared’s room. She came back later to pick up the plates. The two of them kept to their own rooms, not bothering each other.

At five o’clock sharp, Max waited by the front door. Jared came out soon after, backpack slung over one shoulder.

“And I never once thought about divorce. Don’t ask questions like that again.”

“I’m your brother-in-law, so I’ll let it slide. But if you ask someone else stuff like that, you might get punched.”

Jared couldn’t find anything to say. His cheeks went red, maybe from embarrassment.

“Anything else?”

Jared shook his head. “No.”

“We’re here. Go on.”

Jared grabbed his backpack. “Thanks, Max.”

He got out and jogged toward the school gates.

Max chuckled to himself. It seemed he’d finally passed Jared’s test.
