Max pulled over and parked, then made his way into the school, heading straight for the principal’s office.
Principal Walker was just wrapping up a meeting and getting ready to leave when Max walked in. “Max? What brings you here?”
Max gave a small, easy smile. “I was just dropping off my brother-in-law, so I thought I’d stop by and see if you had time to grab a drink tonight.”
Walker paused, eyebrows raised. “Your brother-in-law? You’re not talking about that student you called me about last night, are you?”
He couldn’t hide his surprise. First, he hadn’t expected Max’s brother-in-law to be so young. Second, he hadn’t realized Max was married at all. Max had posted a bit on social media, but the wedding invitations hadn’t gone out yet. Most people still had no idea.
Max nodded. “That’s him. My wife gets anxious. She heard the family my brother-in-law tangled with is pretty powerful, so I just wanted to check in, make sure everything’s okay.”
Walker tried not to smile. She’s Mrs. Clarkson now, he thought. What could she possibly be afraid of? No matter how influential those people are, nobody tops Max.
“I’m free tonight,” Walker said. “Why don’t you bring your wife? We can all have dinner together.”
Max shook his head. “She’s busy tonight. Don’t worry, we’ll invite you to the wedding soon.” He turned the invitation down smoothly and without a second thought.
No way, he thought. My wife isn’t someone I just show off to everyone.
Walker grinned, shaking his head. “You’re a real piece of work, you know that?”
...
Eleanor got a message from Max letting her know he’d be home late.
She figured it was the perfect chance to catch up with her friends. The marriage had happened so fast, she hadn’t even had time to tell them.
Yolanda was free, and Kristina said she’d come too.
When Eleanor arrived at the private restaurant, she couldn’t help but wonder how she’d gotten such a nice spot.
She was in Max’s private dining room, with a view that looked out over a quiet lotus pond.
The shock on Yolanda’s face quickly shifted to worry. “Okay, but who did you marry? Don’t tell me you got back with Peter Clarkson.”
Eleanor rolled her eyes. “Of course not. I wouldn’t make the same mistake twice.”
Yolanda let out a sigh of relief, but then her expression turned serious again. “So who is it? Is he good to you? Is he dependable? Please tell me he’s not another jerk.”
“And why didn’t you tell me sooner? I could have checked him out for you.”
“Oh, and Eleanor? Don’t tell me you went for some younger guy. Those boys are just after your money. Did you marry someone younger?”
Yolanda rattled off her questions one after another. Eleanor couldn’t help but laugh.
“Yolanda, which question do you want me to answer first?”
Yolanda crossed her arms, giving Eleanor a look. “Start by showing me your marriage certificate.”
