From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 223

She was determined to find out who had stolen her best friend away this time.

The marriage certificate was still tucked in Eleanor’s purse. She kept forgetting to take it out. Now, it felt like fate. Eleanor pulled it out and slid it across the table.

“Take a good look. Don’t rush. It’s real, not some fake document,” she said.

Yolanda stared, confused. It was just a marriage certificate. What was the big deal? Who could possibly scare her with a piece of paper?

But when she read the name printed on it, her eyes widened. She shot straight up from her seat.

“You… you… you married Max!” The words exploded out of her just as the waiter came in carrying their food, nearly dropping the plate in surprise.

“Um, ladies… may I serve the dishes now?”

Eleanor smiled at him, calm as ever. “Go ahead, thank you.” She reached for Yolanda’s hand and tugged her back into her seat. “See? I told you not to get so worked up.”

“Not get worked up? Eleanor, this is huge! And you kept it a secret! You actually married him! Max—the legendary devil himself!”

“I know he’s good-looking and loaded, but people say he’s… you know… got issues in the bedroom. Eleanor, are you planning to live like a nun?”

Yolanda blurted it all out before realizing the waiter was still standing there. Eleanor wanted to cover her friend’s mouth with her napkin.

But the waiter just smiled, totally unfazed, and left them to their meal. “Enjoy, ladies.”

Eleanor let out a little sigh and raised her hands. “Yolanda, do you even know who owns this place?”

A chill ran down Yolanda’s spine. “Don’t. Don’t tell me it’s Max.”

Eleanor nodded, her face serious. “It’s his restaurant.”

Juliana had always been cruel to Eleanor, but Yolanda had seen it first-hand since college. While everyone else was out having fun, Eleanor was either studying or running to another part-time job. Later, Yolanda found out Eleanor was paying her own tuition and helping her family too.

Jared’s illness was tough, but what hurt Yolanda more was watching her friend carry all that weight alone.

Then came Peter Clarkson. Yolanda had hoped he’d bring Eleanor some happiness, but it turned out to be another disaster.

She pushed those memories aside and leaned in, lowering her voice like they were sharing a secret.

“Eleanor…”

“Yeah?”

“Is it true? What everyone’s saying about Max… Is he really… not able to, you know… do it?”
