Jessie grinned and tugged Peter down beside her. “Peter, I told you, karma always catches up with people. Do you even know who’s backing Eleanor these days?”
Peter had always suspected Eleanor had someone powerful behind her. There was no way she would have had the guts to divorce him and go straight for someone like Linden to represent her otherwise. Linden was a legend in the legal world, and he never took on more than ten cases a year. Money alone wasn’t enough to get him on your side.
With Eleanor’s background, she couldn’t have hired Linden without a serious connection. And that key transfer record she pulled out in court—how did she even get her hands on that?
“You know who it is?” Peter asked, irritation flickering in his voice. Nobody liked being told they’d been played for a fool. Sometimes he tried to comfort himself, thinking maybe Eleanor just got lucky. But Jessie looked too certain today. She must have real proof.
“It’s my cousin. Wesley.”
Peter’s brows drew together. “Your cousin?”
“Isn’t he married?” Peter asked, a little stunned.
Jessie let out a little snort. “Everyone gave Eleanor too much credit. Turns out she really is the other woman. The evidence is rock solid. Sydney came to me today. Now Eleanor’s trying to wreck my cousin’s family too. Can you believe that…”
She let the words fade, stopping herself before she pushed too far. She knew talking too much trash about Eleanor could backfire and put Peter off.
Peter just couldn’t picture Eleanor as a homewrecker. Besides, Jessie’s cousin was pushing forty. The idea that he’d lost to someone that age stung even more.
“Peter?” Jessie nudged his arm gently. “What’s wrong? Are you upset?”
He snapped out of it. “No, not at all.”
He slipped his arm around her shoulders. “Don’t overthink it. I’m done with her. And if she’s really someone’s mistress now, there’s zero chance I’d ever go back. Actually, I think it’s better if she doesn’t see Olga anymore.”
“I don’t want her setting a bad example for our daughter.”
“You’re right,” Jessie said, leaning in close, a satisfied smile curling on her lips. Whether Eleanor really was the mistress or not didn’t matter to Jessie. She just wanted to use Sydney and blow the whole thing up.
“Wesley, did you not know Grant got expelled? Why didn’t you stand up for him? Why didn’t you go talk to the principal?”
Wesley’s frustration boiled over. “Of course I did. The principal was totally unreasonable, just determined to expel him. What else could I do? Maybe you should look at how you’re raising Grant, since he got into this mess.”
“Grant isn’t just my responsibility,” Sydney shot back, shaking with anger. “If you spent more time at home, maybe things wouldn’t have turned out like this.”
Wesley waved her off. “Enough. I don’t want to fight. I’m already working on getting him into another school. Grant’s grades are great. There’s no way other schools won’t want him.”
Sydney’s anger faded a little. “You better take this seriously and stop acting like it’s no big deal.”
She went back to the bedroom, and all the tears she’d been holding back finally spilled over. She pressed her hand to her mouth, trying to muffle her sobs. At that moment, her resentment toward Eleanor grew even deeper.
She had to find Eleanor and have a real talk, once and for all.
