Jessie Goff poured Sydney a steaming cup of water in her quiet, high-rise apartment. There were no maids around, just the two of them.
“Sydney, just take your time,” Jessie said softly. “No matter what’s going on, I’m here for you.”
It was exactly what Sydney needed to hear. Her hands were shaking as she tried to steady her voice. “I went to the school this afternoon. The teacher told me Grant was expelled. I asked what happened, and it turns out that mistress’s brother got into a fight with Grant. Your brother actually took her side. If he hadn’t, Grant never would’ve been expelled.”
Sydney fumbled for answers. “I looked up this Jared guy… He’s just from a regular family, only has a sister. That Eleanor? She’s divorced. Why would a divorced woman want to ruin my family?”
Jessie let out a long sigh. “Sydney, I know Eleanor.”
“You know her?” Sydney looked up, shocked. “Wait, did your brother really introduce you to his mistress? Has it gotten that far?”
“No,” Jessie said, reaching over to hold Sydney’s trembling hand. “Sydney, listen. Calm down. Eleanor is my cousin Peter’s ex-wife. I’ve known her for ages. She even has a daughter. Not long ago, she insisted on the divorce… I never thought it was because of this.”
Jessie let her words fade, her expression full of confusion. Sydney suddenly felt like all the pieces were clicking together.
Jessie honestly didn’t care if Eleanor and her cousin were actually involved. She wasn’t about to pass up a chance to drag Eleanor’s name through the mud. In fact, if she played her cards right, maybe she could ruin Eleanor’s life for good.
Sydney’s eyes went wide. It all sounded too twisted to be real. “How could this even happen? So they’ve been sneaking around this whole time?”
It felt like her whole world was collapsing. She imagined Wesley just waiting for her to call out the affair so he could bring the other woman home. Then her Grant would have to call that woman “mom.”
Sydney’s eyes filled with angry tears. She refused to let any of this happen.
“Jessie, you have to help me. I’ve been a stay-at-home mom for years. I’m not as sharp as you. You’ve always been brilliant at everything, and you went to a top school. You must have a plan, right?”
Jessie gave her a gentle, almost amused smile. “Sydney, what exactly are you thinking?”
“Don’t panic,” Jessie said calmly. “Like I said, Eleanor cares a lot about her reputation. She’s still new at Clarkson Corporation, hasn’t settled in. If you go to her lab and make a scene, and it ends up online, do you really think Wesley will choose a woman who’s got a homewrecker reputation?”
Jessie’s confidence was contagious. “Even if Wesley wanted to, Perran would never let it happen. Right?”
“Sydney, you’ve helped Perran out plenty of times before.”
That was it. Sydney suddenly felt a rush of hope. Before the Ovard family went under, they were always the Goff family’s best allies. Unless the Goffs were willing to burn that bridge, Wesley would never leave her.
A cold determination flashed in her eyes. “She cares about her image? Fine. I’ll make sure she loses it all.”
Jessie smiled sweetly as she walked Sydney out. Afterward, she grabbed a taxi to her company. She arrived just as Peter Clarkson was finishing up a meeting.
Peter looked surprised to see her. “Jessie, didn’t you say you weren’t feeling well today? What brings you in?”
