From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 233

No one had ever stood up for her like this before. No one had ever been her rock, so unwavering and strong.

Eleanor just stared at the man in front of her, her mind blank for a moment. Max’s features were sharp, his jaw set. The whole room felt serious, but in his eyes she caught something softer, a rare kind of gentleness.

“...Why?” Her voice came out small and uncertain. “Why are you doing all this for me?”

Max looked at her like she’d just asked the most obvious question in the world. “Do I need a reason to support my wife?”

Her heart gave a wild, unsteady flutter. It was like she’d been calm for so long, and now someone had dropped a stone into her still water, sending ripples everywhere.

She managed a tiny smile. Her words were barely more than a breath. “Thank you, Max.”

Thank you for standing behind me, no matter what.

Eleanor took a day off work and spent the afternoon curled up in bed, letting herself rest for the first time in ages. Max was out on the terrace, waiting for updates from his assistant.

She was deep asleep when a call from an unknown number jolted her awake.

“Eleanor, you’ve really got some nerve. So, the reason you rushed to divorce me is because you were already cheating, huh?”

Peter Clarkson’s voice grated through the phone. She didn’t hesitate. She hung up immediately.

Peter, furious, switched to another number, but all he got was the sound of a dead line. The more he replayed everything in his mind, the angrier he became. Still, remembering how she’d been dragged through the mud online, he felt something twist inside him. He was furious, but also... unsettled. He didn’t know who to talk to. He definitely couldn’t vent to Jessie Goff, or she’d go off on him for hours.

He stood by the window, chain-smoking, when his phone lit up with a news alert. Clarkson Corporation had just published an official statement everywhere.
