Sydney called Kristina. “Kristina, can you give me the number of the best divorce lawyer you know?”
“You’ve finally made up your mind?” Kristina’s voice was bright with relief.
“Yeah. Sorry for making you worry. I was sitting by the lake a little while ago, actually thinking about jumping in. But then someone came by and snapped me out of it. I realized if I died, Wesley would just be happy. I don’t want that. I want him to regret everything.”
Kristina’s heart skipped a beat. “What? Sydney, why didn’t you tell me you were feeling like that?” The thought that she might have lost her friend for good made her shudder.
“I’m alright now. I’m not going to do anything reckless again.”
“Where are you staying?”
“I’m going home. It’s my house too. Half of it is legally mine. I don’t need to hide.”
Kristina didn’t know what had suddenly given her friend so much strength, but she was genuinely happy for her. “Okay. I’ll send you the lawyer’s contact right away. Sydney, you used to be a designer. After the divorce, you should get back into your career.”
Sydney smiled, her voice lightening. “I will.”
...
“Ma’am, do you like this wedding dress?” The shop assistant’s tone was hopeful.
Eleanor shook her head. “It feels a little empty here. It just doesn’t suit me.”
She had tried on so many dresses, but none felt right.
Max squeezed her hand. “Pick your favorite designer and we’ll get something custom made.”
He had actually arranged for a famous designer overseas to make a dress just for her, but the designer had broken a bone last week, so the order was canceled. That’s the only reason Max was looking for a dress locally now.
“But if we start over, a custom dress will take at least two months,” Eleanor said.
“Just pick what you like. If it’s about time, money can fix that.” Max never beat around the bush. He always went straight to the point.
“I’m going to the restroom for a minute.”
Max took her bag, a little smile on his lips. “Alright.”
He leaned against the wall, scrolling through his phone. Suddenly, a little girl in pink barreled into his leg.
Olga tripped and fell hard, her eyes filling with tears. “Mister, can you help me up, please?”
Max recognized her instantly. Without much patience, he grabbed her gently by the collar and set her down a few steps away.
