Juliana hadn’t seen Jared in two weeks. When he finally walked through the door, she couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d changed. He seemed distant, almost like a different person.
“Jared, is school stressing you out too much? Do you have enough money?” Juliana had always tried her best to support him.
Jared nodded. “I’m fine, Mom. I have enough. Finals are coming up, and I’m thinking about moving up to sophomore year next semester. It’s just been busy.”
Juliana knew there wasn’t much she could offer when it came to his studies. “Alright, just making sure.”
She wanted to tell him to ask his sister for help if he needed it, but she stopped herself. Instead, she asked, “Have you seen your sister lately?”
“No.”
Juliana felt a knot of fear twist in her stomach. She was terrified of Eleanor now, worried Eleanor would take what she knew to the police and get her arrested. She was also scared that her own mistakes might ruin Jared’s future. Every day, she lived on edge. It wasn’t just Jared who had lost weight—she had too.
“Mom,” Jared said, his voice steady but firm, “I’m not going to ask about what happened between you and Eleanor before, but please, don’t do anything else. If you keep pushing, I’ll have to drop out of school. That’s the only way I can stop you.”
He knew he couldn’t change his mother’s favoritism. The only thing he could use was himself.
“Jared, are you out of your mind?” Juliana was almost pacing in circles. “You really care about your sister that much? What if she wasn’t your sister?”
Jared’s usual gentle look vanished, replaced with something cold. “Mom, what are you saying?”
Juliana realized she’d gone too far. She tried to backtrack. “Well… she said she doesn’t see me as her mother anymore, right? So I thought maybe she’s not really your sister either.”
Jared took a deep breath, trying to keep calm. “Mom, no matter what happens between you two, Eleanor will always be my sister. Please remember that. And I don’t want to hear you say anything bad about her again.”
He picked up his empty bowl and carried it to the kitchen, washing it quietly.
Juliana stood there, feeling wronged. She’d given so much to Jared, so why did he side with that girl every single time? But then she remembered the fortune Eleanor had gotten from Peter Clarkson. If Jared wanted to be close to her, so be it.
