Peter looked at his daughter, his expression hard. “Olga, didn’t I tell you not to cause trouble today?”

Olga crossed her arms, her voice stubborn. “I didn’t do anything, Daddy.”

“You didn’t? Then why did you touch that painting on the wall with your dirty hands?”

Peter knew all too well what his daughter was capable of. He still remembered the time Olga decided Eleanor’s brand new dress would make a great art project. Eleanor had tried to scold her, but Autumn jumped in to defend Olga, turning the whole thing around and scolding Eleanor instead. It was always the same story. It’s just a dress, we can buy another. It’s just a wall, we can hire someone to repaint. Words like that, over and over, until Olga started to believe she could get away with anything. Even now, as a guest in someone else’s home, she thought if something got dirty, her dad could just buy a replacement and that would fix everything.

“Daddy, can’t you afford that painting? Just buy another one for that stingy great-grandpa,” Olga said with a pout.

Peter’s patience snapped. “Olga, who taught you to think this way? Do you really believe everything can be solved with money?”

Olga’s face crumpled. She burst into tears and ran straight into her grandmother’s arms. “Daddy, you’re so mean.”

Autumn hugged her, looking torn. She loved Olga, but she knew her granddaughter was in the wrong this time. “Olga, your father isn’t upset about the money. You were a guest. You can’t act like that in someone else’s house.”

Olga stubbornly lifted her chin. “But Grandma, you never stopped me before. Why is it suddenly not okay here?”

Autumn didn’t have a reply. She just sighed and rubbed Olga’s back.
