His own kids would be the only ones who could ever call Eleanor “Mom.” As for Olga, well, there were plenty of things she’d end up regretting one day.
Max picked just the right moment to call his dad, catching him while he was still annoyed. “Dad, you free tomorrow to meet your daughter-in-law?”
George let out a gruff laugh. “I was starting to think you’d keep her hidden forever. Fine, bring her over.”
“Dad, you’re the elder here. Try not to embarrass me. Mom brought that family heirloom bracelet when she met my wife, remember? If you show up empty-handed, that’s just cheap. I’ll text you the address. Don’t forget to bring something.”
If Max hadn’t hung up so quickly, George would have given him a piece of his mind. Still, he found himself picking out clothes for tomorrow. Meeting his daughter-in-law felt like it needed a bit more formality than usual.
He went to find Marleigh. “You went to see Eleanor behind my back and didn’t say a word. Impressive.”
Marleigh shot him a look, then went silent.
“Don’t just ignore me. Help me pick something to wear.”
Marleigh snorted. “Didn’t you use to look down on her? Complained she was divorced and all that. Now you care about what you wear?”
George hesitated. “They’re already married. What do you want me to do, ask Max to get divorced?”
“As long as you get it. And tomorrow, no matter what happens, you better remember what you just said.”
George didn’t really get her point. Instead of helping him pick out clothes, he got a lecture. He felt like nothing had been going right for him lately. Back in his study, he looked at that ruined painting and felt even worse.
...
That night, when Eleanor learned she’d be meeting Max’s dad the next day, her nerves got the best of her.
“What if he doesn’t like me? Or he can’t get over my past with Peter Clarkson…”
Max grinned. “Then I’ll just go off and start my own branch of the family. He can lose both of us.”
