From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 249

Eleanor took her time getting ready, choosing a crisp white tweed jacket and a matching skirt for today. She slipped on the bracelet Marleigh had given her, the same one her coworker once asked if was a knockoff. Eleanor had just smiled and let the question hang. Around her neck, a slim silver necklace added the perfect touch of elegance.

Max waited just outside the closet. When she stepped out, he couldn’t help but stare. He came closer and gently wrapped his arm around her waist. “Looks like you really went all out to impress my dad.”

He had to admit, his father loved this kind of polished, sophisticated look. The kind of style that made Eleanor seem like she’d stepped straight out of some old-money family photo.

A soft blush colored Eleanor’s cheeks. The silver necklace looked delicate, but it felt a little too simple against her pale skin. Max grinned and pulled a stunning emerald necklace from his pocket, the gems sparkling as he held it up.

He brushed her hair aside and fastened the necklace at her throat. “Wear this today. It might not match your outfit exactly, but it definitely goes with your bracelet.”

Eleanor caught her reflection in the mirror and laughed. “Do I look like I’m trying too hard? Maybe a bit too much like new money?”

Max squeezed her hand and grinned. “New money wouldn’t even dare buy stuff like this.”

George, meanwhile, was fussing over his collar, using his phone as a mirror. Marleigh only rolled her eyes at him.

“What time is it? Why aren’t they here yet?” he grumbled.

Marleigh couldn’t help herself. “You showed up an hour early. Of course they’re not here. That’s how clocks work.”

George rubbed his nose, a little sheepish. “No need to bite my head off. I just didn’t want to get stuck in traffic. If we were late, you’d give me grief for that too.”

Back when they were younger, Marleigh had been the picture of grace and patience. She always made George look good, no matter the occasion. Now that they were older, the tables had completely turned. George sometimes missed the good old days, but he’d gotten used to letting Marleigh run the show.

“Marleigh, just… don’t snap at me in front of Eleanor, okay? Let me have a little dignity.”

Marleigh rolled her eyes again, but nodded. George and his pride—she’d seen it all before. Just yesterday, he’d nearly lost his temper, but managed to hold it in for the sake of saving face.

“I know, I know.”
